OKC Veterinarian
It should be obvious that when you get a new puppy or dog that it needs to
see the vet. This is for many reasons. First, you want to make certain that
you have a healthy animal. You want to know if the dog has some sort of
disease, fleas, mange, rabies, as any of those are possible, especially with a
dog you didn't get from a reputable breeder.
Another reason to visit the vet is to update the dog or puppy on shots they
need to have. If it's a new puppy, he or she will need shots for Parvo, rabies
(depending on age), and other very harmful diseases. If you have a dog,
they should be fine with just the basic yearly rabies shot. This is especially
important if you allow your dog to run around without supervision. You'll
want to know that if your dog were to get bit by a rabid animal that they
aren't also going to contract the disease. While some people don't believe in
getting yearly shots, it's recommended you speak with your vet regarding
your specific animal. Chances are slim that your 100% indoor Labradoodle
show dog is going to contract rabies unless they somehow escape the
house.
Perhaps the most important reason for visiting an OKC veterinarian for a
check-up is simply the well-being of both you and the dog. Regular visits to
the vet help the dog to become comfortable with the vets office, rather than
associating it as something negative. Dogs think the same way regarding the
vet. If every time they go to the vet it's for something negative, they won't
want to go. However, if you go to the vet, sometimes just to say hi, the dog
associates it as just another visit somewhere.
Visits to the vet for a check-up are much more important if you have an
indoor/outdoor dog, rather than completely indoors. If your dog starts
behaving out of the ordinary, that's definitely time to visit the vet for a
check-up.
