Project Overview
During the Spring of 2014, several wildfires occurred around communities in Denton County. These wildfires prompted
Denton County Emergency Services to approach and begin working with the Texas A&M Forest Service to complete a
county-wide Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Wildfire risk assessment training delivered by the Texas A&M Forest
Service to county fire departments allowed the Flower Mound Fire Department to identify Roanoke Hills as a commu-
nity with high risk of loss during a wildfire event.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Grapevine provided property adjacent to Roanoke Hills for the demonstra-
tion site to educate the public and improve safety. The Texas A&M Forest Service Chisolm Trail Task Force out of Min-
eral Wells and several Flower Mound Fire Department firefighters created a 25 feet wide shaded fuel break by removing
understory and invasive Chinese Privet using chainsaws, hand pruning tools, and a wood chipper in unseasonal cold, icy
conditions over a 2-day period.
