I think it's fair to say that I owe my marketing career to games. Games have taught me community management, social media, content marketing, and of course, gamification. In 1999, I taught myself HTML with the help of the "Complete Idiot's Guide" to create a fan site for a virtual catering company in an online video game (I had staff, made deliveries, and catered virtual weddings). The experience helped me land a job with PC Connection's internet marketing team. In 2004, I went to work for Turbine as a community manager for the sequel to that same video game I'd created the fan site for.
