4. Questions Asked
1.)At what age did you start doing your own hair?
2.)Do you have other family members that style your hair at your current age?
3.)Do you have older family members (18 and up) that get their hair done by
other relatives?
4.)Would you say it’s normal for your family to take care of each other’s hair
regardless of their age?
5.)Do you think people should style their own hair once they are capable, or is
it fine for them to ask their family to help out with it?
5. Interview #1
Q1.) 10 years old
Q2.) No. My mom stopped doing my
hair once I turned 10. I have never seen
my relatives do anyones hair over the
age of 18, unless it was for a wedding.
Q3.) No
Q4.) Normal, but it doesn't happen in
my family.
Q5.) It depends on the situation. It’s
more likely they are helping to be nice. If
the person has a disability or say
arthritis then they would be incapable
and would need to recieve help.

6. Interview #2
Q1.) 17 years old.
Q2.) My mom and cousin put my
hair in braids. I also go to get my
hair trimmed by a family friend.
Q3.) My dad cuts my brother’s
hair.
Q4.) Yeah.
Q5.) It shouldn’t matter what
people think of what my family
does. It’s more of a comfort thing
rather than incapable.

7. Interview #3
Q1.) I've been growing it out since
July 2017.
Q2.) I wash my hair, pick it, and grow
it out. No one does my hair.
Q3.) My dad does my uncle’s hair.
That's about it.
Q4.) I would say it’s normal.
Q5.) It’s fine for them to help style
their hair. No, no, because they are
incapable.

8. Interview #4
Q1.) 11 years old.
Q2.) No.
Q3.) No.
Q4.) Yeah. There are some things you can’t do by
yourself. I can’t braid my hair, so I would have
someone help me.
Q5.) It falls in the same realm as the last
question. If your like 40 and it’s easy to do, then
no you shouldn’t ask for help (unless you can’t
physically do it). I’m 20 and there are some
hairstyles I don’t feel like doing, but I can still
learn to. But it is fine if you don’t have the time.

9. Interview #5
Q1.) 13 probably.
Q2.) No, not really.
Q3.) Yeah. Now that I think about it actually
no. I was thinking of my uncles and aunts,
but they do my nieces and nephews hair.
Q4.) Yes. Moms tend to give haircuts to their
kids.
Q5.) Yes and no. I feel like part of it is that
once you are older you should be able to do
your own hair, but it shouldn’t be off the
table to ask for assistance either.

10. Interview #6
Q1.) 12 or 13.
Q2.) My mom braids my hair.
Q3.) Yes. Well I do my mom’s hair
and sometimes my grandma’s
hair at gatherings.
Q4.) Yes.
Q5.) I think it’s fine, no matter
their age, to ask for help.

11. Interview #7
Q1.) Probably 6th grade, so around 12
or 13.
Q2.) No.
Q3.) No.
Q4.) If they couldn’t do it themselves
then yeah, but my family doesn’t so it
would be weird.
Q5.) Yeah. People should style their own
hair once they are capable. It’s fine if
they are busy or can’t, so yeah for both.

12. Interview #8
Q1.) 10 years old.
Q2.) No. It frustrates me when
others touch my hair.
Q3.) No. I haven’t had a family
member do that in a long time.
Q4.) Yeah if you’re comfortable.
Q5.) People should do whatever
they want, so both I guess.

13. Interview #9
Q1.) Probably in middle school.
Q2.) Not really.
Q3.) I don’t think so.
Q4.) Yeah, I would say it’s normal.
