2. NEW TOYOTA FORTUNER LAUNCHED IN SA
http://topcar.co.za
The long-awaited follow up to Toyota’s much-loved family SUV, the Fortuner,
has landed on South African soil !!!
The front end of the Fortuner is certainly styled with fresh intent, designed to stand out from the
crowd, sculpted lines and slender headlamps but the visible underbody protection seems to sug-
gest it will be tough out of the city as well. A large upper grille is slanted and framed by plenty of
thick chrome plating that extends around said slender headlamps, while deeply recessed fog
lamps give the idea of width lower down the front. The typical strong character line running along
the profile of the car, between the flared wheel arches, the Fortuner’s black C-pillars and pro-
nounced rear spoiler to give the impression of a floating roof when viewed from the side. The
sleek LED lamps and licence-plate garnish blend with yet more complex surfacing of the rear
body. The interior emphasises comfort and convenience. Premium soft-touch materials are used
in key contact areas around the dashboard, windscreen pillars and doors, complemented by me-
tallic accents and woodgrain detail. Most prominent stylistically is a centre console flanked by
vertical columns covered in soft-touch materials that also provide leg support for the driver and
front passenger. Still a 7– seater with three rows, the second-row seating (60/40) has a slide
function and reclining backrests and the 3rd-row (50/50) only a recline function, which can be
stowed to provide additional luggage space. The standard sound system comes with USB port,
AM/FM/CD .
3. Top models boast a DAB+ digital radio, a 7-inch screen with DVD compatibility, a reversing cam-
era display, Bluetooth connectivity, steering-wheel audio and telephone controls. The 4.0 V6 is
equipped with satellite navigation. Air conditioning comes with separate air-flow controls for sec-
ond-row. The frame was specially designed for torsional rigidity. The side rails and cross-
members are reinforced, while the body uses high-strength steel for excellent rigidity and crash-
worthiness yet minimising weight. The new suspension is double-wishbones up front with a four-
link coil-spring rear suspension, with stabiliser bars. The hydraulic power-assisted steering is
road-speed sensitive developed to suit challenging and extreme conditions usage requirements
on and off road. Fortuner is propelled by a range of newly developed engines, being the 2.4
(110kW @ 3400rpm and 400Nm(1600 - 2000rpm)and 2.8 GD (130kW and 420Nm1600-
2400rpm) diesel series, the 2.7 VVT-i (122kW and 245Nm) and 4.0 V6 (175kW and 376Nm )
petrol engines. All models come with 6-speed Manual and Auto transmission. Standard Safety
equipment includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Active Traction Control (ATC), Trailer Sway
Control (TSC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Drive Mode Select. Downhill Assist Control
(DAC) is available on 4×4 models.

4. Can good road manners save you fuel on SA roads?
Les McMaster, chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), says in hard
times consumers think twice about their expenditure and many are left scrambling to meet the
running costs of their vehicles.
One of the ways motorists can reduce the running costs of a vehicle is to improve fuel economy.
But how exactly do you do this? What really works in SA?
Be more considerate on the road
McMaster says: “It may seem petty, but being a considerate, patient driver is good for your fuel
tank. Aggressive, agitated drivers tend to stop and start abruptly, especially in city traffic, and
this places a lot of wear and tear on the car.
"Take it easy on your brakes and transmission and your car – and fuel tank – will return the fa-
vour." He adds that it isn’t advisable to forego a service or maintenance if your car needs it be-
cause it could end up costing you a lot more in the long run.
Miwa has published as many FUEL-SAVING TIPS AND FACTS for you to consider
1. Make sure the tyres are the right pressure
2. Stick to the speed limit (This could save you over 10% on fuel, and even more on the high-
ways)
3. Don’t idle your vehicle (Turning the ignition off instead of idling, can save you about 20% on
fuel)
4. Avoid rush hour (the constant starting, stopping and idling is a fuel-economy killer!
5. Keep the boot light ( Extra weight in the boot requires extra power and extra fuel from your
engine
