2. STANDARDCERTIFICATERENEWALREQUIREMENTS
EducatorsholdingStandardCertificatesmustrenewthecertificateeveryfiveyears;however,educatorsholdinglifetimecertificatesareexemptfromtherenewalprocess.Therulesadoptedby
theStateBoardforEducatorCertification(SBEC)forrenewingcertificatesarecodifiedatTitle19,PartVII,TexasAdministrativeCode(TAC),Chapter232,SubchapterB,andareavailablethrough
theTexasEducationAgency(TEA)website,http://www.tea.state.tx.us.
STANDARDCERTIFICATERENEWALREQUIREMENTS:Allcertifiededucatorsseekingtorenewacertificatemustdothefollowing:
qcompletetheappropriatecontinuingprofessionaleducation(CPE)clockhours;
qcompletetheonlinestandardrenewalapplication;
qpaytheappropriaterenewalfee;-successfullycompleteacriminalhistoryreview;and
qnotbeindefaultonastudentloanorinarrearsofchildsupport.
CONTINUINGPROFESSIONALEDUCATION(CPE)REQUIREMENTS:CPErequirementsforeachclassofcertificate,asperTAC§232.851,areasfollows:
qclassroomteachersmustcomplete150clockhourseveryfiveyears;and
qcounselors,learningresourcespecialists/librarians,educationaldiagnosticians,readingspecialists,masterteachers,superintendents,principals,andassistantprincipalsmustcomplete200
clockhourseveryfiveyears
PleasenotethateducationalaidesarenotrequiredatthistimetocompleteanyCPEhoursforcertificaterenewal.
CONTINUINGPROFESSIONALEDUCATIONACTIVITIES:CPEclockhours,asperTAC§232.860,canbeaccruedthroughthefollowing:
qworkshops,conferences,andin-serviceorstaffdevelopmentgivenbyanapprovedregisteredprovider;
qundergraduateandgraduatecourseworkthroughanaccreditedinstitutionofhighereducation,withonesemestercreditbeingequivalentto15CPEclockhours;
qinteractivedistancelearning,videoconferencing,oron-lineactivities;
qindependentstudy,nottoexceed20%oftherequiredclockhours;
qdevelopmentofcurriculumorCPEtrainingmaterials;
qpresentingCPEactivities,nottoexceed10%oftherequiredclockhours;and
qservingasamentor,nottoexceed30%oftherequiredclockhours.
WrittendocumentationandverificationofallCPEactivitiesforStandardCertificaterenewalmustbemaintainedbytheeducator.ItistheresponsibilityoftheeducatortodeterminewhichCPE
activitiesmeettherequirementsforstandardcertificaterenewal.TEAstaffmayauditCPEactivityrecordsatanytime.
CONTINUINGPROFESSIONALEDUCATIONPROVIDERS:AllpersonsororganizationsprovidingCPEactivitiestoeducatorsforStandardCertificaterenewalmustberegisteredwithTEA.Providers
mustfurnish,asperTAC§232.872,eacheducatorwithwrittendocumentationtoinclude:
qprovider'snameandIDnumber;
qeducator'sname;
qdateandcontentoftheactivitycompleted
qnumberofclockhoursawarded.
OnlythoseCPEactivitiesfromTEAregisteredproviderswillberecognizedforStandardCertificaterenewalpurposes.AllCPEprovidersapprovedbyTEAarelistedunderthe"EducatorCertification"
linkontheTEAwebsite.
