● Van Gogh moved to Arles, South France.
● Using expressive color highlights the detail in his painting.
● The room is vibrant, and even has its own paintings inside the painting.
8. Saint Remy
Van Gogh went through manic depression from time to time. In Saint Remy in
1888, van Gogh got in an altercation with the artist “ Gauguin and proceeded to
cut off part of his ear. Furthermore, He was admitted to a hospital where his
symptoms likely worsened.
9. Blues against yellows and orange
● Van Gogh admired artists who used colors in creative ways, reading multiple
books on color theory.

10. Description
● Vincent Van Gogh displays vivid paintings using color in remarkable ways.
Although his paintings earlier on in his career such as the bland colored
peasant paintings, were much more dull.
● The lighting in the room really helped display his works. Without the indoor
lighting it would be hard to interpret all of the details and color patterns.
11. Analysis
● Van Gogh’s work wasn’t always planned as he suffered from bouts of
depression. Thus inspiring some of his greatest works such as “ Starry Night
“.
● In his earlier career he tended to paint peasants doing rural life chores or
farming.
● Although he suffered from mental illness he was still a productive artist with a
monumental amount of work.
12. Interpretation
● Van Gogh’s works make me curious of rural life in the mid to late 19th
century.
● The paintings he created are unlike other artists. The paintings in his earlier
career were less vibrant and lacked color.
● Later on after becoming an “ impressionist “ painter, he started to incorporate
more flashy colors. For example “ Starry Night “ uses blues and yellows to
make an outstanding night sky.
13. Evaluation
● I think that ultimately Van Gogh’s paintings are a massive success.
● In order to judge this more clearly, notice the museum leaves a paper next to
the paintings so you can read background information.
● Lastly, I believe his work is original in the sense that he was a front runner in
the art industry at the time and left behind a massive influence on painting.
