ASD Diagnosis Guideline Project Description
1. Developing a National Guideline for
Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosis in Australia
The aim of this project is to develop a National Guideline for Autism Spectrum Disorder
(ASD) diagnosis in Australia. The goal is that this National Guideline would define a
diagnostic process that is rigorous, accessible, client-centred, clinically acceptable,
effective, efficient, and equitable for individuals being assessed for ASD.
This National Guideline will be developed by a team comprising Professor Andrew
Whitehouse (Speech Pathologist), Associate Professor John Wray (Developmental
Paediatrician), Professor Margot Prior (Psychologist), Professor Valsamma Eapen
(Child Psychiatrist) and Kiah Evans (Occupational Therapist). Additional input will be
received from a Steering Committee made up of representatives from all key
stakeholders involved in ASD diagnosis, including consumers and a wide range of
professional groups (e.g. medical, allied health and education).
The project will follow four phases:
Review Existing Guidelines and Research Evidence (August – November 2016)
A thorough review of existing guidelines and research evidence will be conducted
internationally to identify all components that may be included in the process of
diagnosing ASD. These components will be evaluated in relation to a range of quality
criteria.
Seek Input from Key Stakeholders (December 2016 – February 2017)
Input will be obtained from all key stakeholders through interviews, forums and
surveys. This input will allow the most important components for diagnosing ASD to
be identified. The Steering Committee will provide additional input into this process.
Develop Draft National Guideline with Key Stakeholders (March – May 2017)
A draft National Guideline will be developed based on findings from the above two
phases. This draft document will be revised in response to feedback from the Steering
Committee to ensure the perspectives of all key stakeholders are included.
Prepare Final National Guideline (June – August 2017)
The draft National Guideline will be reviewed by the National Disability Insurance
Agency to ensure that it is aligned with entry requirements for the National Disability
Insurance Scheme. Revisions will be made as necessary to produce a final National
Guideline for ASD Diagnosis in Australia. The National Guideline for ASD Diagnosis
in Australia will be released in September 2017.
