Dear Eastern Family,
During the school year 2015-2016, I had the
opportunity to internhere at Eastern Guilford High in
the capacity of Administrative intern. My roles at
Eastern are extension, but under my mentor; Ms.
Williams, I have achieved several milestones.
The attendance project is quite dear to me, as
several students over the years that I have been here,
have failed and continued failing for the sole reason of
attendance. While some situations may be the students
fault, I have seen several which is no fault of the
student, but includes several difficulties within their
home. Please be mindful that there are some that are
homeless, and if they miss the bus, they have no other
way to come to school.
As we go forward throughout quarter 4, please
remember to enquire about student absences and
truancy that you may observe. Please indicate this to an
admin and also to the respective counselor.

ATTENDANCE AND YOUR LIFE
Attendance is essential to student
achievement,because being present allows
students to get everyopportunity to learn the
concept. Having the opportunity to complete
the work without learning the information is
sometimes challenging. Students tend to
complete assignments based on prior knowledge
and the grades are reflective of this. As well,
using data to funnel your reteachmethod is
flawed whenthe informative is not valid because
students were not present whenthe information
was initially given.
Attendance is also vital for student success
and in a few years, absenteeism does not benefit
your co-workers and you will not be seenas a
productive team member.Additionally it is also
used for evaluation purposes, which could result
in an increase in pay or paid promotion.
It is up to teachers to let parents understand
how important attendance is to students. Yes I
said “TEACHERS”,because sometimes,we are all
these students have. In essence,what I learned
in high school was a stepping stone for the rest
of my life and it is essential that these students
are afforded the same opportunity.
Attendance is tied into all aspect of our lives,
and we should make it a habit to encourage
students to come to school. Whenthey are in
school, it is easier to promote good work ethics
and help them to grow as an individual.

Please remember to have your student stay in
the media centerwith me on Wednesday and
Thursday. As well, this is supplemental to the
days that you stay for tutorial, so students will
have several opportunities to make up
time/work.
