2. About 5,000 years ago, some African tribes made an unusual discovery.
By making a tiny hole in tents made out of animal hide, tribe members realized light passing through the hole
made an image inside.
It paved the way for pinhole photography, which involved boring tiny holes in cylindrical objects like cans to
make crude cameras.
By positioning light-sensitive photo paper inside the can across from the pinhole, the camera could be
pointed at an image for a time to create a photo.
The public was invited to experience the art Sunday afternoon at the Washington County Museum of Fine
Arts in Hagerstown.
For $5 per person, participants were provided with a pinhole camera, which consisted of a hole drilled in a
quart paint can. After capturing images outside the museum with the devices, the paper was developed to
unveil the pictures.
Among those taking part was Heather Holman of Hagerstown.
Holman said her husband got her a pinhole camera three years ago.
"But I was too scared to use it," said Holman, who said she didn't want to waste the photo paper for it.
So she got the rundown on pinhole photography at the museum, then ventured outside for experimentation.
Holman focused on "Diana the Chase," a sculpture at the museum that faces the lower lake of City Park from
a glass enclosure.
Holman said she could see the sculpture from her vantage point. But instead, the camera picked up on the
reflection of trees in the enclosure.
"It was really cool," Holman said.

About a dozen people participated in the event, which coincided with Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day.
The program also included a lecture on the history of pinhole photography and a talk by retired Martinsburg,
W.Va., photographer Frank Herrera about how such photography works.
Visitors were invited into a giant pinhole camera of sorts in the museum's atrium. Four chairs were lined up in
a large dark tent. When everyone was inside, the tent was closed and they were allowed time for their eyes
to adjust to total darkness.
Eventually, if observers were lucky, they saw an image of a swan come to life on a screen in the tent. It was
projected through a pinhole outside the tent that was positioned in front of a swan carving.
Herrera said he used to teach students about pinhole photography. They often came in with all sorts of fancy
modern photo equipment. In some cases, they never wanted to go beyond pinhole photography because
they were so intrigued by it, he said.
Herrera said he always appreciated the craft, especially after dealing with "the business executives" in his
trade.
"It gives you something to come back to if you need recharged," he said.
