COVID-19 – Introduction
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious
disease caused by a new virus. The disease
causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with
symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more
severe cases, difficulty breathing.

Timeline
1. A pneumonia of unknown cause detected in
Wuhan, China was first reported to the WHO
Country Office in China on 31 December 2019.
2. The outbreak was declared a Public Health
Emergency of International Concern on 30
January 2020.
3. On 11 February 2020, WHO announced a
name for the new coronavirus disease: COVID-
19.
4. The coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting 183
countries and territories around the world and 1
international conveyance (the Diamond Princess
cruise ship harbored in Yokohama, Japan).

As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to evolve,
comparisons have been drawn to influenza.
Firstly, COVID-19 and influenza viruses have a
similar disease presentation. That is, they both
cause respiratory disease, which presents as a
wide range of illness from asymptomatic or mild
through to severe disease and death.
Secondly, both viruses are transmitted by
contact, droplets and fomites. As a result, the
same public health measures, such as hand
hygiene and good respiratory etiquette (coughing
into your elbow or into a tissue and immediately
disposing of the tissue), are important actions all
can take to prevent infection.”

Droplet Transmission
People can catch COVID-19 from others who have
the virus. The disease can spread from person to
person through small droplets from the nose or
mouth which are spread when a person with
COVID-19 coughs or exhales. These droplets land
on objects and surfaces around the person. Other
people then catch COVID-19 by touching these
objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose
or mouth. People can also catch COVID-19 if they
breathe in droplets from a person with COVID-19
who coughs out or exhales droplets. This is why it
is important to stay more than 1 meter (3 feet)
away from a person who is sick.
Studies to date suggest that the virus that causes
COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through contact
with respiratory droplets rather than through the air.

prevent or treat COVID-19.

• Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, with soap and

flexed elbow when you cough or sneeze
• Avoid close contact (1 meter or 3 feet) with people who are
unwell
• Stay home and self-isolate from others in the household if
you feel unwell

Hand Sanitation
Hand sanitation is the single most effective way to prevent the
spread of infections. It is one of the best ways to protect yourself
and your family from getting sick.
Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of
germs in most situations. However, soap and water are not readily
available, and usage of an alcohol based hand sanitizer that
contains at least 60% alcohol provides equivalent and hassle-free
sanitation.
Usage of hand sanitizer post washing provides added protection
after washing, their effectiveness is based on several factors in
addition to which product you use, including how much to use,
proper technique and consistency.

Fomites consist of both porous and nonporous surfaces or objects
that can become contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms
and serve as vehicles in transmission.
Daily sanitizing surfaces and objects that are touched often, such
as desks, countertops, doorknobs, computer keyboards, hands-on
learning items, faucet handles, phones, and toys. Some schools
may also require daily disinfecting these items. Standard
procedures often call for disinfecting specific areas of the school,
like bathrooms.

Disinfection with Ultra Low Volume Fogger can be carried out
throughout the targeted areas, coats, surfaces with thin even
layers, sanitizing the air and surface around it. Fogging works on
compression of disinfectants using a specially designed nozzle
that produces minute cold mist or aerosol. The smaller size,
