What is Reddit?
๏‚š Social News Aggregator for sharing user-generated content.
๏‚š Former research focused on the readability and characteristics of posts, the lifespan and
propagation of content, internet activism, and opinion leadership.
๏‚š This analysis is based on the Information Service Evaluation (ISE) model, with focus on objective
and subjective service quality and the acceptance of the service by the users.

Research Questions
RQ1. How good is the objective quality of Reddit and its content?
RQ2. How satisfying is the perceived quality of Reddit?
RQ3. To what degree do Reddit users accept the service and what
are their reasons to stop using it?
Methods: Model
๏‚š Investigation based on the
Information System Evaluation
model by Schumann and Stock
๏‚š Theoretical framework and
comprehensive heuristic model
Methods: Online Survey
๏‚š Between May 29, and July, 7 2017.
๏‚š Most questions inculded pre-formulated answers.
๏‚š Questions about perceived system quality: is Reddit easy to use, useful, trustable and enjoyable?
๏‚š Questions about the information acceptance: adoption, use, impact and diffusion of Reddit.
Methods: ServQual
๏‚š Evaluation of perceived service quality.
๏‚š Tests (13 tasks) conducted with 10 students.
๏‚š Applied to measure the difference (gap) between usersโ€˜ expecation of a SNA and their
experience with Reddit.
๏‚š 7-point Likert-scale.
Methods: Content Analysis
๏‚š Measuring the objective content quality.
๏‚š Readability and understandability of all comments (N=315,376) published between June 19 and
June 25, 2017, from six subreddits.
๏‚š Readability measure was based on the โ€œautomated readability indexโ€ by Senter and Smith (1967)
with a scale from 1 to 12 (โ€œvery easy to readโ€ to โ€œvery hard to readโ€œ).
๏‚š The understandability was evaluated with self-provided measure based on sentence and word
length, and frequency distribution of part of speech tags (inspired by Kercher, 2013).
๏‚š The understandability score is between -5 and +5 (โ€œvery hard to understandโ€ and โ€œvery easy to
understandโ€).
Results: Demographics
๏‚š The qestionnaire was completed by 474 active and 15 former Reddit users.
๏‚š They originated from the USA (42%), Germany (18.1%), UK (8.5%), and Canada (6.9%).
๏‚š Male (58.4%), female (39.1%), people identifying with another gender (2.6%).
๏‚š Biggest age group between 18 and 26 years (48.5%).
๏‚š Most are high school graduates (39.4%) or hold a Bachelorโ€™s or equivalent degree (32.3%).
Research Questions
RQ1. How good is the objective quality of Reddit and its content?
Results: Objective IS Quality
๏‚š The retrieval system is primarily a fielded search, Boolean operators (AND, OR, and NOT) can be
added to the search query.
๏‚š Effectiveness of the retrieval system based on the Mean Average Precision is very high:
๏‚š MAP = 1.0
๏‚š Every search query showed only relevant results.
๏‚š The average time to load Reddit is 1.585 seconds (about 55%. of the websites on the Internet are
slower).
๏‚š Gamification elements: rankings of the posts, โ€œKarmaโ€ (ratings of the posts), badges (collected
through site activities).

Discussion
๏‚š Redditโ€˜s structure is similar to chat forums and message boards with some gamification elements
(rating of posts, collecting badges, Karma system).
๏‚š The perceived IS quality suffers from some shortcomings (interface, navigation, search function).
The friendliness of the community was a positive factor.
๏‚š The content quality was rather good (easy to understand and read).
๏‚š Users know Reddit from SNSs or from friends.
๏‚š Reddit seems to be extremely time consuming, some users perceive the contents as useless,
which may lead to opting out.
Thank you for your
attention!

Discussion ๏‚š Redditโ€˜s structure is similar to chat forums and message boards with some gamification elements (rating of posts, collecting badges, Karma system). ๏‚š The perceived IS quality suffers from some shortcomings (interface, navigation, search function). The friendliness of the community was a positive factor. ๏‚š The content quality was rather good (easy to understand and read). ๏‚š Users know Reddit from SNSs or from friends. ๏‚š Reddit seems to be extremely time consuming, some users perceive the contents as useless, which may lead to opting out.

Editor's Notes

  1. This analysis of Reddit and its quality as an Information Service, based on the Information
  2. This concept of democratizing online news and the fact that users can register themselves with an anonymous username made Reddit popular especially in the U.S. โ€œReddit Ads,โ€ companies are able to โ€œlaunch promoted posts targeting any Reddit communityโ€ However, by buying โ€œReddit Gold,โ€ the premium membership, Reddit users can disable the advertisement and customize the design (Reddit, 2017b).
  3. An individualโ€™s information need is the starting point of any information behavior (information production as well as information search and reception behavior) and his or her acceptance of a service, or information acceptance (adoption, use, impact, diffusion, and opting-out) (RQ4). If the โ€œrightโ€ user meets the โ€œrightโ€ information service, she or he will adopt and use it. Adoption does not mean use. One can adopt a service and stop using it. And one can adopt it and use it permanently. We speak of use, when the user applies some of the information serviceโ€™s functionalities in his or her professional or private life once there is information need on hand. In the case of use, it is possible that the userโ€™s information behavior or his or her general behavior will change. This aspect is called impact. Finally, an information service can diffuse into a community, when many people use it and it has an impact on their information behavior. Diffusion is a typical phenomenon of network economics (Linde and Stock, 2011) following the principle of โ€žsuccess breeds success.โ€ The more users an information service is able to attract, the more the value of the service will increase. More valuable services will attract further users. If an information service passes the critical mass of users, network effects will start. This leads to positive feedback loops for direct network effects (more usersโ€”more valuable serviceโ€”any more users) and indirect network effects (more complementary productsโ€”more valuable serviceโ€”any more complementary products) andโ€”when indicatedโ€”in the end to establishing itself as a standard (Baran, Fietkiewicz and Stock, 2015). Diffusion is a social process depending on the extent to which friends, family members, peers, colleagues, club members, etc. influence a userโ€™s information behavior. Finally, there is the aspect of quitting an information service. Opting-out is motivated by (altered) information behavior of the user and by his or her position in the community. ย
  4. The subreddits were chosen based on the range of content and depth of the topics they provide. Furthermore, the subreddits are relatively popular and offer a good basis for the number of comments.
  5. A user can rate it as positive, with an upvote, or negative, with a downvote. The voting influences the ranking of a post. There is also the opportunity to become a Reddit Gold Member. The membership is paid with real money. A Reddit Gold Member will have access to additional site functions. One can edit the style of the website (theme changing), customize Snoo, the alien mascot of Reddit, and has access to a โ€œsecret lounge.โ€ Furthermore, gold members are able to test Beta versions of the Reddit website and other features.
  6. The measuring of the objective content quality (RQ2) showed similar results: the readability is reliant on the selected subreddit. The comments of โ€˜r/pythonโ€™ (n=1,656, readability Mean (M)=6.11, Standard Deviation (SD)=7.83, understandability M=1.66, SD=1.80) and โ€˜r/worldnewsโ€™ (n=148,513, readability M=4.40, SD=6.83, understandability M=1, SD=1.78) are harder to read and understand than for instance โ€˜r/funnyโ€™ (n=80,239, readability M=2.23, SD=7.86, understandability M=1.66, SD=1.83) and โ€˜r/gamingโ€™ (n=76,560, readability M=2.87, SD=10.57, understandability M=1.44, SD=1.81) (Table 2; Table 3). ย  Only 25% of the comments of โ€˜r/funnyโ€™, โ€˜r/gamingโ€™, โ€˜r/nsfwโ€™ and โ€˜r/depressionโ€™ have an understandability score smaller than 1, which means that most of the comments are easy to understand โ€ฆ According to the readability index, more than 75% of the structures of the texts of the subreddits โ€˜r/gamingโ€™, โ€˜r/funnyโ€™, โ€˜r/nsfwโ€™ and โ€˜r/depressionโ€™ and more than 50% of the comments of r/worldnews and r/python are already suitable for children as young as 10 years. Overall, the comments on Reddit are mostly easy to read and understand. The data of the questionnaire suggests this, too. From the participantsโ€™ point of view, the content is rather up-to-date (Median: 4, Q0.25: 4, Q0.75: 5), rather easy to read (Mdn: 4, Q0.25: 4, Q0.75: 5), rather easy to understand (Mdn: 4, Q0.25: 3, Q0.75: 4), but less unbiased (Mdn: 2, Q0.25: 1, Q0.75: 2) and neither credible nor not credible (Mdn: 3, Q0.25: 2, Q0.75: 3). Overall the content quality of Reddit can be considered as being rather positive (Mdn: 3.5, Q0.25: 3, Q0.75: 4). According to the readability index, more than 75% of the structures of the texts of the subreddits โ€˜r/gamingโ€™, โ€˜r/funnyโ€™, โ€˜r/nsfwโ€™ and โ€˜r/depressionโ€™ and more than 50% of the comments of r/worldnews and r/python are already suitable for children as young as 10 years.
  7. The subjective information system quality of Reddit, measured by the perceived usefulness and the perceived ease of use, was determined by the four statements: Reddit is enjoyable, trustable, useful, and easy to use. The results are clear (Table 1): The participants perceive Reddit as enjoyable, as 48.1% strongly agree (5) with the statement. About 40.9% of the participants rated the service with 4 points of 5 concerning the statement that Reddit is useful, while 46.4% rate it with 3 of 5 points of its trustworthiness and 41.2% rate 4 of 5 concerning the statement that Reddit is easy to use.
  8. We can say that, based on the results, the perceived service quality suffers from a subpar user interface, navigation, and a user-hostile search function.
  9. The participants were asked for which possible reasons they would quit using Reddit. The biggest reason is the realization that Reddit is time consuming (28.7%). Furthermore, it provides a lot of information and input, which is not always valuable to the user (28.1%) (Table 4). The questionnaire was also designed to find out why people do not use Reddit anymore. Of the 15 former Reddit users, 31.8% stated too much input as one of the main motives (Table 4). The user could state additional reasons. The community was seen as a turn off and in this context, political reasons were also mentioned such as โ€œliberal bias,โ€œ and the fact that Reddit is โ€œan absolute echo chamberโ€œ where โ€œnon-leftists opinions just arenโ€™t compatible with them [the Reddit community]โ€œ, according to another participant. Overall, the findings on why people quit Reddit seem to align with the findings on the possible reasons why some users would consider it, with too much useless input and too much time spent on Reddit mentioned as the main motives.
  10. Reddit is most popular social news aggregator.
