DEVELOPING
TECHNOLOGIES IN THE FILM
AND TV INDUSTRIES
CONSUMER PRODUCTS
• Consumer products Is a form of technology in the film and TV industry which mainly consists within the
general public, these products are specifically made for the general public, for example; products in
home cameras such as the DSLR made by companies such as Nikon and Cannon, editing software such
as Adobe premier Pro, Audio recording devices such as a Shotgun mike these products are made to
make affordable and accessible to the public, this generates a lot of money into the film industry
because the companies that produce these products can put more money into developing new
technology to make better products for filmmakers and also the general public to purchase. It also
allows the general film public to be able to develop their own films.
SATELLITE AND CABLE TELEVISION
• Satellite: Satellite Television is a form of broadcasting channels that is requires a satellite dish, this depends on if it is most
suited to the customers depending on where they live, most broadcasting services such as BT and SKY will only allow satellite
service into certain areas, say if someone was living in a scheduled area near a forest then they probably be using cable,
satellite provides a much stronger connection to the channels and gives the best quality and is also much cheaper to run
rather than cable.
• Cable: Cable television which since technology has progressed throughout the years is probably the least used broadcasting
format with most consumers, because it is more expensive to use and does not usually give the best quality, but it also rarely
uses connection and has been around much longer than satellite, most services such as Sky and BT provide cable television
depending on where you live.
ANALOGUE AND DIGITAL
• Analogue: analogue television is the original television technology that uses analogue signals to
transmit video and audio. In an analogue television broadcast, the brightness, colours and sound are
represented by rapid variations of either the amplitude, frequency or phase of the signal.
• Digital Television: Digital television is the transmission of audio and video by digitally processed and
multiplexed signal, in contrast to the totally analogue and channel separated signals used by analogue
television. Digital TV can support more than one program in the same channel bandwidth.
• As technology has progressed through years analogue TV’s are no longer made since the switch over, so
TV stations do no longer support analogue.
• Internet: The internet now in the world of technology is probably the most used way of viewing Television and Films on
demand, Illegally and Legally with services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and crackle (Free streaming service) allow the
customer to have hundreds upon hundreds of shows to watch on demand in the click of a button from the television (smart
TV’s) computer, tablet, Phone Etc. these are mostly paid by subscriptions other on demand services such as All 4 and Crackle
are funded through adverts and do not take in revenue the same way as paid services do, because most of these have been
funded by the channels these services already have up on television. Illegally there are various amounts of forms of illegal
streaming and ‘Torrenting’ for example Websites such ‘Putlocker’ (putlocker.is/featured/1) and 123 Movies (123movies.to/)
provide this illegal service, Torrenting websites such as Pirate Bay (https://proxybay.tv/) allow the user to illegally download
files which contain films and other sources of media. Both of these forms of internet usage of media productions has affected
the media industry in various ways such as screaming legally and illegally has affected some media productions financially
through box office numbers cause the lack of audience members attending screenings because they can watch hundreds of
films in their home at the click of a button. ‘Torrenting has affected the financial status of the Film and TV Industry because
the lack of purchase through digital, physical and box office media has lost high amounts of money.
• Interactive: In the past decade people have been able to interact with their Films and Television shows more effectively
Through technology such Streaming devices like Chrome cast which allows you to use various streaming services such as
Netflix and All 4. Services like this also allow the viewer to pause, fast forward and rewind recorded and live TV , before these
streaming services were created first came the television boxes such as the Sky Plus Box and Virgin TV which allowed the
viewer to perform all of these ground breaking interactions digitally. We also can interactive through social media such as
facebook and twitter allow the general public to express opinions towards media.
INTERNET AND INTERACTIVE
HIGH DEFINITION AND 3D
• HD: High Definition (HD) gives the viewer the opportunity to watch Films and Television with a higher
quality definition which is over 420p which is considered standard Definition the Aspirations above are
720p and 1080p which provide a better crystal clear image. The majority of moving image productions
provides this option for example YouTube allows you to change video definition when watching, various
television channels have HD alternate channels (Sky 1 HD, ITV HD, BT sport HD Etc) The majority of
streaming services provide a fully HD option to their services (sometimes at higher price)
• 3D: 3D is 3 dimensional; content created to make the illusion that the content on the screen is popping
off making it look like the image are coming towards you off of the screen, a few years ago this form of
viewing was very popular in the cinematic sense, films such as Avatar elevated the popularity of 3D and
was used a ‘gimmick’ for years but recently it is not considered as popular by the general public as
much as High definition is. The majority of films do not support 3D but through the years technology
has been devolved to allow 3D to be viewed in homes with 3D TV’s allowing football matches, films and
television specials, games have also used 3D technology through television.
PAY PER VIEW (PPV)
• PPV: Pay Per View is a on demand and Live Television service which allows the user to
purchase a film or event for one single viewing. This service can be accessed through TV
menus or can be purchased from your television provider online or over the phone ,
Sports events and Films are the highest provided forms of media on pay per view
services because the generate high amounts of income to the media and sports industry.
Companies such as Sky Box Office and HBO allow viewing of brand new on demand film
releases and Live sports events such as Boxing matches and Wrestling Events to be
bought through their PPV services
ON DEMAND VIEWING
• Video on demand (VOD) is a form of online service which allows the viewer to access television shows
(primarily) and films through apps which allow people to view from most devices such as Smart TV’s ,
Tablet, Phone, Computer, Streaming Box Etc.
• These services were primarily created to allow people to view television shows without having to go out
of their way to watch it at a scheduled time and to allow them to watch their media freely. This is done
through streaming, and Recording. Apps such as BBC I player and All 4 Provide this service for free.
• This has service over the years has given the user the freedom to enjoy their TV viewing needs at any
time, any place and on any device of their choice.
STREAMING CONTENT
• Streaming Content in the world of technology today is massively popular it is one of the most or most
likely the most used format to watch TV shows and Films. Streaming is content which is streamed
through the internet without needing to be recorded or having to have files downloaded it the most
simplistic way of viewing media on demand. Providers of this service such as ‘Netflix’ and ‘Hulu’ give
their customers a cheap monthly subscription usually between the prices of £5-£10 depending on the
service and added qualities of the service.
• Streaming was primarily created to providing the media to the viewer , allowing the viewer to access
the content they want from home on any device.
DIGITAL RECORDING (DVR)
• DVR: Digital recording devices also know as DVR is technology which allows the user Download, Record or
stream television and film content onto a device which is stored onto a hard drive on the device known as a
HDD, SD Card or Most regular storage devices . Streaming devices such as the ‘Roku Box’ or The
‘Chromecast’ are DVR devices which allow the customer options such as on demand videos, multiple
streaming platforms, live television and recording of live television. These devices attracted customers
because they are simple devices which allow the user to access content upon content through various
media services.
