HI I AM JYOTI
TEXTILE EXPRESSIONIST
This might sound little dramatic but the truest expression of my connection with textile is beyond tangible;
to me it is the taste, the smell, the vision, the sound, the emotions and the touch. When I started studying
textile at National Institute of design I wasn’t sure that this is what I wanted but then I fell in love with all
aspects of textiles. The fibre, yarn and fabric, all had unique textures, a rhythm and fluidity that became
part of me. I love the way the colors just blend into the fabric, textures just happen all over the fabric.
Textile and all these amazing techniques are like interwoven stories, each leads to another and I love the
narration each piece creates. I love being the creator of this narrative and so here I am a textile
expressionist changing the fabric of everyday life into a textile story.
DESIGNER
A designer is a person who designs. More formally, a designer is an agent that "specifies the structural
properties of a design object". In practice, anyone who creates tangible or intangible objects, such as
consumer products, processes, laws, games, graphics, services and experiences is referred to as
a designer.(-Wikipedia)
Yes, I am this designer too but not only this designer. My approach to designing always starts with a
question which I continuously ask myself, what would the experience be, should and must be? I use
design thinking as one of the crucial tools for my designs, I like to collaborate and contribute along with all
involved in building any “design”. I think as my story becomes theirs and theirs mine a more sustainable
design; A happy design emerges.
SPIRITUAL MENTOR
It all started as it always does, seeking answers for my existence, my purpose and my life. My journey
towards and into spirituality started because I was seeking a sense of connection to something bigger
than myself and all those in my life, I wanted to search for meaning in life, and of life. Whatever I felt in
terms of emotions-failures and success was still an incomplete, unfinished experience. The quest for
spirituality started as a universal human experience—something that touches us all. Today my motivation
comes from every aspect of my learning a spiritual learner myself and as a spiritual guide to many like me
who seek this completeness. I exist today as a past life regressionist and a spiritual healer.
A WOMAN AND A MOTHER
Being woman and especially a mother did not come easy to me, I guess it never does. To walk the path
of the woman and then that of a mother is never easy, today I am proud to be a woman; a woman who is
a mother, wife, friend, teacher, healer, professional and many more
LIFESTYLE RESEARCHER
It has been over two decades that I finished my design education and started working as a professional
designer, we in India were in the midst of export boom and I was confused, confused because no one
back at design school explained that trends did not get decided in India, my question was why? This
question lead to my getting into researching lifestyle trends; influences, impacts, and consumer behavior,
I wanted to understand my consumer irrespective of demographic location, I wanted to not only
understand but create trends for my consumer. I enjoyed researching on lifestyle and trends, the
discoveries, whether big or small, is what started to drive my passion for lifestyle trends and colors; today
my research on lifestyle encompasses much more than just clothing and accessories.
FOODIE
Food feeds the soul and I got to experience this at a very young age. Like most of the Indian houses
around that time in my parents’ home too food was the context around which each weekend, every family
function, festival and celebration was planned. Food time was the talk time, sharing experience and
bonding time, We lived in many cities and food was the single great unifier across all various cultures we
were part of. As I grew up this continued with how I handled food and people, what I cook today and what
is relished and enjoyed by my friends, family and people around is an accumulation, a function of all my
experiences.
EDUCATOR
A teacher instructs specific skills and content according to a curriculum and developmental level. A n
educator coaches individuals to become what is essential — to develop into human beings who are fully
alive.(-by Sr Geralyn Schmidt)
These words by Sr. Geralyn Schmidt resonate with what I believe. I have been both,a teacher and an
educator for last two decades. Both words describe a different aspect of what I do in a profoundly
different manner. For me, Education is the most interesting and difficult adventure in life. I believe even
though content is important, it is by no means the only thing our students need. I work with an integrative
approach to teaching in which students are guided towards self-discovery and integration of what they
have learnt into their lives. I believe it is time to bring in visible and effective changes by designing new
sustainable learning tools at all levels of education; school, higher education, technical, non-technical and
creative domains; my new inning as an educator has just started where I am trying new avenues beyond
design education.
