Conducting this survey made me realize something. That perhaps C.O.B students have
more in common than I thought. Well, actually in terms of why we all are here. I surveyed myself
and 3 others. Two whom attend the College and one that does not. The results I found is something
that is not surprising. In term of coming to college the reasons were split. As it turns out, most
participants went to college because their parent encouraged them too. For those who have siblings
they were not encouraged because either they did not support it or they were too young to
understand what is going on. As for the friends part, most were not encourage because for various
reason but one was encouraged because they all wanted to be together; from beginning to end.
Again most Surveyors noted that they had no main obstacles faced on coming to college
except one. This one person noted that they have transportation issues on getting to and from
college. This is something I can relate to because I and most students do not drive to school or
have no car so catching bus or buses is the only option. The expectations of coming to college was
spilt in half between the Surveyors. Two of them had no expectations what so ever. One was a
positive response and the other was more neutral as they were told to avoid some areas on and
around campus and to be careful when it rains. That last response I would share to all future
students of this institute. Do not make yourself an easy target for others. The advice shared by all
except one screams the same thing. “Be prepared”! College life in not the same as Grade School.
You love the freedom given to you but be prepared for the culture shock of the institution.

Reading is a serious thing. It is so important but everyone read at a different level. This is
because we all have different learning styles. We all read differently. This starts from when we are
young. The Surveyors were asked only a few questions on this and everybody responses were
different because they were brought up differently. Two out of the four could not remember how
old they was when they first started to read. The other two was fairly young between the ages of
2-5. As for who taught them to read, one said Mother, another said maybe a teacher and the rest
do not know or at least cannot remember at the time. The one item everyone agreed on was that
they all were encouraged to read by parents and or guardians. However that changed when the half
of them said their parents or guardians did not read to them when they were younger but the rest
said they only read to them after they ask to read them a story.
Overall I believe that the College can make a different in the way the future generations of
Bahamians are encouraged to pursue learning. Especially how C.O.B is entering the transition into
University status, the possibility are endless.
