The Gondolas City becoming Atlantis

Thank you for listening to the Gnome’s Podcast, the purpose of all this
information is to have a high grade on research and writing.
Welcome to gnome’s information, today’s topic is going to be a wonderful city,
which is very likely to turn like an ancient and legendary city, Atlantis. This is ------
- presenting research and writing’s podcast project.

Venice, a beautiful city known because of amazing architecture and
artwork, but mainly because its amazing attraction, the water streets, they mainly
don’t use cars for transportation, they use boats. A business city, living museum
and a romantic place, special because of its water canals, but as amazing and
wonderful it is, as in danger it is.

The architecture and history of this city is really amazing. It was mainly
built over a moody lagoon in order to escape from some Germanic attacks.
Because of its great physical position, that helped a lot for defense and
protection for the citizens. It stopped the Germanic attacks and suddenly grew, by
creating bridges that connected to near islands, and finally became a powerful
place during medieval times.

As time passed by, this amazing city has been sinking and sinking.Though
it was built over mud, it compresses as a natural process. According to
Scientifics it is sinking about eight millimeters per year, which in fact isn’t a really
big issue. The real problem is that because of the global warming and the rising
of the sea level, it has a problem so-called subsidence, which means that the
floor sinks because of the rising water. So even though it is sinking it is also
flooding at the same time.

People is already used to live with eighty centimeters of water to one
hundred and ten centimeters as high, this means that water usually covers their
ankles, this problem is fixed by people wearing high anti water shoes. But this is
mainly on season of low water level, according to the PBS, in high water level
season (acquaalta) it can sometimes reach the 190 centimeters, which means it
is very likely to cover your waist, belly and even probably your chest. This is
considered as flood, as inundation and it’s impossible to live in this situations. “I
really could not live in those situations, a life without walking, and running, it’d be
bad”
“Sometimes I can’t even walk to my house from the super market, without
getting my stuff all wet. We are used to have water on the floor, and we fix it with
high boots, but when the water goes up to your knees or higher. It really
becomes annoying. We are used to have rainy days and floods on April, but the
problem is also when there are storms and floods on different season of the year.
That we don’t expect. Classes are often canceled because of this issue” this was
a Venice citizen explaining us his problems. I really feel sad for him.

Maybe it could be fun for a tourist to walk in a city with water high as your
ankles, but for a daily day it isn’t.

Though it is an important city for tourism, history and for Italian people,
there is already a project in order to save this city, which will also be the biggest
construction on Italy. According to NOVA, The MOSE project, acronym for
Module Sperimentale Electromechanical, is mainly electro mechanical high as 20
meter gates that would work as barrierand would moderate the flow of water that
go into the peninsula, by opening and closing the gates. In order to reach
waterlevels of 110cm as minimum a maximum of 3 meters of the lagoon so that
on earth people can have a normal and constant water level. This is supposed to
control the floods and will keep the city alive for some extra time.

The proposal for the project MOSE has been declined, started, accepted
and restarted a lot of times. It seems that the Italian government and Scientifics
cannot agree in a final conclusion. According to an article of the PBS, written by
John Keahe. It was first proposed on December 2001 “Supporters of the project
said design work would begin this fall (2002), with construction getting under way
within a few years. The most ardent supporters said they believed the gates
would be in operation between 2007 and 2010. On September 23, 2002,
however, the Venice City Council voted to reconsider its support for the gates
and raised the specter that the project should be reevaluated.” John Keage said
on 2002.

The project officialed started to be built on march of 2003, but because of
change of government and reconsideration of Scientifics. They said that this
technology was going to be obsolete by the year it was going to be finished, and
that also it won’t be useful. Thus, the amount of money that is going to be
expended is probably to be lost, though as the acronym says it’s a Sperimentale,
Experimental.

Also some environmentalists say that this is going to stop the flow of water
and the Venice ecosystem is going to be really affected, many species will die
and the whole environment will change. The closing of the gate would cause the
flow of water to stop, and suddenly turn the peninsula into a close pond, this will
alterate the levels of oxygen on the water and abruptly kill some species.
Nevertheless, even worse, when the gates open, I think that the stanked water is
going to mix with oceans water and pollute the ocean. This is pretty bad.

“This is a way of funneling a huge amount of money to business allies of
the government,”The Christian Science Monitor claims that this isn’t really the
best option, many people has protested against this project and think that the
government wants to give money to some of their friends. Many options aren’t
really being considered because of this monstrous act.

Therefore in an article written by erlaZwingle on Iamnomakinthisup, net
says thaThere have been a few times when it appeared that perhaps the project
would be annulled for various reasons: lack of money, the bizarre absence of the
required Environmental Impact Statement, legal loopholes that kept being found
and then quickly closed. But nothing has been able to stop its implacable
progression toward completion. It’s like throwing gravel at the Kraken. I really
think she is correct and that this is really happening.Polititians argument is that
some enviorment and money is less worth than rebuilding the churches,
museums and historical parts of venetia.

However, even thou the project is slow and unsolved. On 2009 there was
a 69 percent of competition of the project, but because of the crisis was stopped
and it is supposed to be running again. It is estimated to be finished on 2014.
While this is in process also people is adapting to the new environment and
building higher floors and raising the walking-floor.

These issues are sad and uncertain but there is nothing that a good
revolution cant solve.
