Executive Summary
The Iron Horse Challenge is unique, family-oriented event that can be enjoyed by people
of all ages. Wiffle-Ball is a game that can be played year-round in backyards, parks and
basically anywhere. Our plan is to provide a unique event for families to take part in during the
holidays for fun, and to donate to a worthy cause. The “Iron Horse” was a pseudonym for
arguably one of the best baseball players of all-time and lifelong New York Yankee, Lou Gehrig.
He earned this nickname because he was known to play through a bevy of injuries that any
player today would find themselves on the disabled-list for. Unfortunately for Gehrig, his career
was cut short due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and now known as “Lou Gehrig’s
Disease”. With our connection to Tampa, where the New York Yankees call home during
Spring Training, we hope to bring in a variety of people to our event from across the state of
Florida and beyond, along with potential hometown sponsorships. Our goal is to raise at least
$10,000 to donate to the ALS Foundation to further research and hope to one day find a cure for
such a devastating disease.
Event Description
What does our event provide for our customer? Our event provides a unique and rare,
family-oriented, charitable cause that occurs when not much is truly happening. The date of our
event is on Black Friday so basically while the wives are out shopping, husbands, sons and
daughters and can come participate in our tournament. Now, we are not saying that all wives are
going to be out shopping on Black Friday; they are more than welcome to come participate as
well. Our event will last all day, and will not have to compete with events like college football
or professional football. There are many factors that will make our event successful as well. Our
location is the parking lot next to Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
and within walking distance of the Spring Training complex home to the New York Yankees.
Like stated before, our event holds close ties to the Yankees so that is a huge potential sponsor
and marketing tool we can use. Our personnel will be well trained and know the game of
baseball very well which will help when it comes to game operations, and overall an enjoyable
experience to be a part of. The value it brings it to our customers is a chance to participate in a
fun and competitive game, all while giving back to a charitable cause.
Market Analysis
The beautiful thing about my Wiffle-Ball tournament is that the idea of a such a thing is
already something you do not see very often. After some research on the inter web, I found only
a handful of Wiffle-Ball tournaments to ever exist in the state of Florida; most of which were
annual but no longer in business. My tournament also differentiates in the style of gameplay. A
tournament I saw that’s played in Vermont uses a 9 player team on a very small field, which
seems overcrowded and cramped to me. I researched another tournament that is played in
Buffalo called “Wiffalo”. Their fields feature a fence that is about 90 to 95-feet away and lines
on the field marking a single and a double while a ball that strikes the fence in the air is a triple.
Needless to say a ball that goes over the fence is a home run and they use “ghost runners” instead
of actually running the bases (Wiffalo). I’m not a fan of that so I drew up my own style of game
which I think can make it more fun, create more teams, and give the game a more realistic feel.
The first annual tournament date is set for November 25th, 2016 in Tampa, Florida which
is Black Friday. I picked this day because it is a day most people generally have off of from
work and school. This is also a big football weekend as there are 3 NFL football games on
Thanksgiving day, college football on Saturday, and more NFL football games on that Sunday so
I would not have to compete with those events as they are my indirect competition. The other
Wiffle-Ball tournaments I found are mostly played in the summer so I would not have any direct
competition either. With it being Florida, I also picked this date as the weather is much nicer
closer to winter time rather than in the dog days of summer. As far as a venue is concerned, I
have decided on setting up the fields in the big grass parking lots next to Raymond James
Stadium and the New York Yankees Spring Training complex.
There is a connection between the New York Yankees and my tournament. My
tournament is going to benefit the ALS Association. ALS is short for amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis, or better known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. Lou Gehrig was a Hall of Fame baseball
player who played his entire career with the New York Yankees from 1923 to 1939 (Baseball
Reference). With there being a heavy fan base of Yankee fans in a lot of places, especially
Tampa, there could be a lot of participants who will want to participate in the event for this
reason. Lou Gehrig was known as the Iron Horse because of his everlasting ability to stay on the
field, even battling through injuries that no one today would ever play through. For this reason, I
have decided to name my event “The Iron Horse Wiffle-Ball Tournament” which will benefit the
ALS Association. Another unique aspect to my tournament is that concluding your final game at
the tournament, you must then participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The ALS Ice
Bucket Challenge swept the nation in 2014 when “over 17 million people uploaded their
challenge videos to Facebook” and these videos were watched “440 million people a total of 10
billion times” (ALSA.org).
What makes my style of game different? Like I said before, some of these tournaments
based of what I have seen on websites and by watching videos on YouTube, have teams of a full
9 players on the field at a time. Some only have 2 or 3 defensive players on the field. My game
will have 5 players on the field at a time with an extra hitter, so essentially it will be a lineup of 6
players. The positions on the field are up to the team itself but by default I would say it will be
Pitcher (1), Left infielder (2), Right infielder (3), Left-Center Outfielder (4) and Right-Center
Outfielder (5). I drew a diagram to better explain this. Last summer, I built a strike-zone out of
PVC pipe and a slab of wood that is held to the PVC by zip-ties. The strike-zone is
approximately 22 inches laterally and about 30 inches tall and it is held up by two 8 inch posts
that have legs. I also have pictures of this. I haven’t quite sat down and figured out how I’m
large I’m going to make the dimensions of the fields, but I am going to scale them from famous
Major League parks such as Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium, Polo Grounds and any other unique
ideas I can come up with. In a perfect world, I can build an efficient way to make certain
landmarks such as the Green Monster from Fenway Park. That’s another aspect that will make
my tournament different, the experience and feel of playing in a big league stadium.
My target market is going to families; it will be a family type of event. I am going to
have a competitive division, a more fun style of play division and then a kids’ division because
Wiffle-Ball is a game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I will also offer a deal that is
unique as well. When a team pays their entry fee to the tournament, they can pay slightly extra
per person to also enter their kids into the tournament. Essentially it’s almost a buy one, get one
at reduced rate. So instead of these families having to find entertainment for their kids or
needing a babysitter, they can enter them into the tournament as well. The Thanksgiving holiday
is meant to be spent with family so I would not want these parents to have to be away from their
kids in order to participate in the tournament. The non-competitive or fun division will entail
slow or underhand pitching but will still keep score. I have not decided if it will be a normal
style of tournament play or just have a set amount of games that every team is guaranteed. Like
stated before, some styles of Wiffle-Ball include not running the bases, and some play where you
have to throw the ball to first base to get the runner out at first on a ground ball. This can be
difficult to do because these balls are hard to throw in a normal straight line or because of the
very short distance of the base path. So in order to alleviate this, I made the pitcher’s hand rule
come into play. What is this rule? If a ground-ball is hit to a fielder, the runner must step on
first base before one of the fielders throws the ball back to the pitcher. So essentially the first
baseman is the pitcher. I believe that having this rule can help decrease game time and rule out
any wimpy ground balls or bunts that a player might beat out for a hit. Overall, my tournament
is one that is very unique not only in the way it is played, but because there are not many of these
tournaments around as it is. I would like to give families a chance to compete in a fun,
competitive environment during a family holiday, while giving back to a good cause that not
only baseball fans, but all people can appreciate, while giving back to a good cause. Wiffle-Ball
is a spin off of America’s Pastime and is a game that people of all ages can enjoy, which is why I
think that this tournament can be successful, and not have any direct, or indirect competition for
that matter.
Organization & Management
The organization of The Iron Horse Challenge is fairly simple. At the top there is the
tournament director which I put myself in charge as. With me as far as the hierarchy goes, is the
facilities director. Under the facilities director and the tournament director are the parking,
concessions, and officials’ managers which are three separate individuals. Underneath the
parking manager, there are four parking attendants, two for each lot. Then for concessions there
is one person per concession stand, and then two restroom attendants. The restrooms are two
rows portable bathrooms so it’s basically just overseeing and keeping people in line. There are
four umpires, one for each field, and then two security guards who will be roaming the premises.
If any of the staff needs assistance of some sort, every one besides the umpires will have walkie-
talkies so that the tournament or facilities director can come assist with the problem. For
example, if one of the concession workers need more supplies, they can call in the director to
have someone, or himself bring what is needed. In terms of ownership, I am a sole proprietor. I
hired all of these people how I see their personalities fit, and simply because they were easy
names to generate as I lack a creative bone to create fictitious names.
Sport Property & Legal Agreements
What are the benefits of participating in the Iron Horse Challenge? It’s truly simple, it’s
a way to participate in a fun, unique, and charitable event that is a spinoff of America’s pastime.
In terms of direct competition, our event truly doesn’t have any. There are very few Wiffle-Ball
tournaments in the state of Florida, let alone on Black Friday. Indirectly, we may have to
compete with Black Friday shopping, but that has already been addressed previously.

Marketing & Sales
How will I reach my target market? Social media has become a volatile way to advertise.
With the use Facebook advertisements AND including the events’ social media handles on the
other (magazine and post-card) advertisements it will flood the sites with more visits. Everyone
of all ages use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter so being able to easily access those
venues is very important for people. For those who do not use social media, I included my
website tag and phone number to reach personnel within the event.
I believe that my ads are very vibrant and that the colors pop. There is also a consistent
font and color scheme intertwined in the ads. I do this because I’m very particular about
continuity within a single project. Including the Wiffle-Ball tournament logo in all of my ads I
feel was an attention grabber because it is a unique logo and displays what kind of event it is
without having to explain it with words. Including the social media logos like Facebook and
Twitter I felt were important because they are also important attention grabbers. In my opinion,
if someone were to see the ad I think that their eyes would gravitate not only to the Wiffle-Ball
logo but also to the social media logos because people of all ages really enjoy keeping up on
social media sites.

Sponsorship Proposal (Funding Request)
Dear (Potential Sponsor),
On November 26th, 2016, in Tampa, Florida the first annual Iron Horse Challenge will be
held. What is the Iron Horse Challenge you may ask? The Iron Horse Challenge is a Wiffle-
Ball tournament that can be enjoyed by those of all ages during the holiday season. Not only is
this event a time that can be shared by people of all ages, but it is a chance for people to give to a
charitable cause which is the ALS Foundation. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), more
commonly known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease”, is a very rare disease of the nervous system that
weakens muscles and impacts physical function. As you may know. Lou Gehrig was a hall-of-
fame baseball player who played his entire illustrious career with the New York Yankees.
Nicknamed the Iron Horse, Gehrig was notorious for playing through broken bones, sickness and
other inhibitions which would keep the average player off the field in today’s day and age. The
tournament is held in the large parking lot located next to Raymond James Stadium, home of the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Spring Training complex of the New York Yankees which
really brings this tournament a more home-like feel.
You may be asking yourself, “What is this have to do with me?”. Well, frankly it has
everything to do with you. With your financial assistance, we can help give your company some
extra advertising and even introduce a whole new spectrum of customers. The best part is not
only will you be able to visually see your company being advertised, but whatever money that is
generated from this tournament will be directly donated to the ALS Foundation to help improve
research, and hopefully someday find a cure to this terrible disease. How else can you help? You
can donate equipment, food, or drink rather than money. However, when it does come to
monetary donations, we do have a variety of sponsorship packages that you may in fact decide to
choose from. They are:

The Iron Horse Challenge
As you can see, our event will raise over $11,000 for charity, with MINIMAL projections
as far as team participation goes. Original estimates had double the amount of teams in each age
division (32, 16), however considering it’s a rare event and it’s in its first year, I decided to go
with 16 adult teams and 8 youth teams.
Location
Our location is the parking lot next door to Raymond James Stadium and nearby to
Legends Field and the New York Yankees Spring Training Complex. The fields will be
constructed in the grass and will easily be built and torn down.

Master Report-Final

  • 1. Master Report for The Iron Horse Challenge (Wiffle-Ball Tournament) Jordan M. Lindsay Lynn University BUS 482A Dr. Charles Barr December 8th, 2015
  • 2. Executive Summary The Iron Horse Challenge is unique, family-oriented event that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Wiffle-Ball is a game that can be played year-round in backyards, parks and basically anywhere. Our plan is to provide a unique event for families to take part in during the holidays for fun, and to donate to a worthy cause. The “Iron Horse” was a pseudonym for arguably one of the best baseball players of all-time and lifelong New York Yankee, Lou Gehrig. He earned this nickname because he was known to play through a bevy of injuries that any player today would find themselves on the disabled-list for. Unfortunately for Gehrig, his career was cut short due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and now known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. With our connection to Tampa, where the New York Yankees call home during Spring Training, we hope to bring in a variety of people to our event from across the state of Florida and beyond, along with potential hometown sponsorships. Our goal is to raise at least $10,000 to donate to the ALS Foundation to further research and hope to one day find a cure for such a devastating disease. Event Description What does our event provide for our customer? Our event provides a unique and rare, family-oriented, charitable cause that occurs when not much is truly happening. The date of our event is on Black Friday so basically while the wives are out shopping, husbands, sons and daughters and can come participate in our tournament. Now, we are not saying that all wives are going to be out shopping on Black Friday; they are more than welcome to come participate as well. Our event will last all day, and will not have to compete with events like college football or professional football. There are many factors that will make our event successful as well. Our location is the parking lot next to Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
  • 3. and within walking distance of the Spring Training complex home to the New York Yankees. Like stated before, our event holds close ties to the Yankees so that is a huge potential sponsor and marketing tool we can use. Our personnel will be well trained and know the game of baseball very well which will help when it comes to game operations, and overall an enjoyable experience to be a part of. The value it brings it to our customers is a chance to participate in a fun and competitive game, all while giving back to a charitable cause. Market Analysis The beautiful thing about my Wiffle-Ball tournament is that the idea of a such a thing is already something you do not see very often. After some research on the inter web, I found only a handful of Wiffle-Ball tournaments to ever exist in the state of Florida; most of which were annual but no longer in business. My tournament also differentiates in the style of gameplay. A tournament I saw that’s played in Vermont uses a 9 player team on a very small field, which seems overcrowded and cramped to me. I researched another tournament that is played in Buffalo called “Wiffalo”. Their fields feature a fence that is about 90 to 95-feet away and lines on the field marking a single and a double while a ball that strikes the fence in the air is a triple. Needless to say a ball that goes over the fence is a home run and they use “ghost runners” instead of actually running the bases (Wiffalo). I’m not a fan of that so I drew up my own style of game which I think can make it more fun, create more teams, and give the game a more realistic feel. The first annual tournament date is set for November 25th, 2016 in Tampa, Florida which is Black Friday. I picked this day because it is a day most people generally have off of from work and school. This is also a big football weekend as there are 3 NFL football games on Thanksgiving day, college football on Saturday, and more NFL football games on that Sunday so I would not have to compete with those events as they are my indirect competition. The other
  • 4. Wiffle-Ball tournaments I found are mostly played in the summer so I would not have any direct competition either. With it being Florida, I also picked this date as the weather is much nicer closer to winter time rather than in the dog days of summer. As far as a venue is concerned, I have decided on setting up the fields in the big grass parking lots next to Raymond James Stadium and the New York Yankees Spring Training complex. There is a connection between the New York Yankees and my tournament. My tournament is going to benefit the ALS Association. ALS is short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or better known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. Lou Gehrig was a Hall of Fame baseball player who played his entire career with the New York Yankees from 1923 to 1939 (Baseball Reference). With there being a heavy fan base of Yankee fans in a lot of places, especially Tampa, there could be a lot of participants who will want to participate in the event for this reason. Lou Gehrig was known as the Iron Horse because of his everlasting ability to stay on the field, even battling through injuries that no one today would ever play through. For this reason, I have decided to name my event “The Iron Horse Wiffle-Ball Tournament” which will benefit the ALS Association. Another unique aspect to my tournament is that concluding your final game at the tournament, you must then participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge swept the nation in 2014 when “over 17 million people uploaded their challenge videos to Facebook” and these videos were watched “440 million people a total of 10 billion times” (ALSA.org). What makes my style of game different? Like I said before, some of these tournaments based of what I have seen on websites and by watching videos on YouTube, have teams of a full 9 players on the field at a time. Some only have 2 or 3 defensive players on the field. My game will have 5 players on the field at a time with an extra hitter, so essentially it will be a lineup of 6
  • 5. players. The positions on the field are up to the team itself but by default I would say it will be Pitcher (1), Left infielder (2), Right infielder (3), Left-Center Outfielder (4) and Right-Center Outfielder (5). I drew a diagram to better explain this. Last summer, I built a strike-zone out of PVC pipe and a slab of wood that is held to the PVC by zip-ties. The strike-zone is approximately 22 inches laterally and about 30 inches tall and it is held up by two 8 inch posts that have legs. I also have pictures of this. I haven’t quite sat down and figured out how I’m large I’m going to make the dimensions of the fields, but I am going to scale them from famous Major League parks such as Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium, Polo Grounds and any other unique ideas I can come up with. In a perfect world, I can build an efficient way to make certain landmarks such as the Green Monster from Fenway Park. That’s another aspect that will make my tournament different, the experience and feel of playing in a big league stadium. My target market is going to families; it will be a family type of event. I am going to have a competitive division, a more fun style of play division and then a kids’ division because Wiffle-Ball is a game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I will also offer a deal that is unique as well. When a team pays their entry fee to the tournament, they can pay slightly extra per person to also enter their kids into the tournament. Essentially it’s almost a buy one, get one at reduced rate. So instead of these families having to find entertainment for their kids or needing a babysitter, they can enter them into the tournament as well. The Thanksgiving holiday is meant to be spent with family so I would not want these parents to have to be away from their kids in order to participate in the tournament. The non-competitive or fun division will entail slow or underhand pitching but will still keep score. I have not decided if it will be a normal style of tournament play or just have a set amount of games that every team is guaranteed. Like stated before, some styles of Wiffle-Ball include not running the bases, and some play where you
  • 6. have to throw the ball to first base to get the runner out at first on a ground ball. This can be difficult to do because these balls are hard to throw in a normal straight line or because of the very short distance of the base path. So in order to alleviate this, I made the pitcher’s hand rule come into play. What is this rule? If a ground-ball is hit to a fielder, the runner must step on first base before one of the fielders throws the ball back to the pitcher. So essentially the first baseman is the pitcher. I believe that having this rule can help decrease game time and rule out any wimpy ground balls or bunts that a player might beat out for a hit. Overall, my tournament is one that is very unique not only in the way it is played, but because there are not many of these tournaments around as it is. I would like to give families a chance to compete in a fun, competitive environment during a family holiday, while giving back to a good cause that not only baseball fans, but all people can appreciate, while giving back to a good cause. Wiffle-Ball is a spin off of America’s Pastime and is a game that people of all ages can enjoy, which is why I think that this tournament can be successful, and not have any direct, or indirect competition for that matter. Organization & Management The organization of The Iron Horse Challenge is fairly simple. At the top there is the tournament director which I put myself in charge as. With me as far as the hierarchy goes, is the facilities director. Under the facilities director and the tournament director are the parking, concessions, and officials’ managers which are three separate individuals. Underneath the parking manager, there are four parking attendants, two for each lot. Then for concessions there is one person per concession stand, and then two restroom attendants. The restrooms are two rows portable bathrooms so it’s basically just overseeing and keeping people in line. There are four umpires, one for each field, and then two security guards who will be roaming the premises.
  • 7. If any of the staff needs assistance of some sort, every one besides the umpires will have walkie- talkies so that the tournament or facilities director can come assist with the problem. For example, if one of the concession workers need more supplies, they can call in the director to have someone, or himself bring what is needed. In terms of ownership, I am a sole proprietor. I hired all of these people how I see their personalities fit, and simply because they were easy names to generate as I lack a creative bone to create fictitious names. Sport Property & Legal Agreements What are the benefits of participating in the Iron Horse Challenge? It’s truly simple, it’s a way to participate in a fun, unique, and charitable event that is a spinoff of America’s pastime. In terms of direct competition, our event truly doesn’t have any. There are very few Wiffle-Ball tournaments in the state of Florida, let alone on Black Friday. Indirectly, we may have to compete with Black Friday shopping, but that has already been addressed previously.

With the use Facebook advertisements AND including the events’ social media handles on the other (magazine and post-card) advertisements it will flood the sites with more visits. Everyone of all ages use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter so being able to easily access those venues is very important for people. For those who do not use social media, I included my website tag and phone number to reach personnel within the event. I believe that my ads are very vibrant and that the colors pop. There is also a consistent font and color scheme intertwined in the ads. I do this because I’m very particular about continuity within a single project. Including the Wiffle-Ball tournament logo in all of my ads I feel was an attention grabber because it is a unique logo and displays what kind of event it is

  • 15. Banner Ad Postcard Sponsorship Proposal (Funding Request) Dear (Potential Sponsor), On November 26th, 2016, in Tampa, Florida the first annual Iron Horse Challenge will be held. What is the Iron Horse Challenge you may ask? The Iron Horse Challenge is a Wiffle- Ball tournament that can be enjoyed by those of all ages during the holiday season. Not only is this event a time that can be shared by people of all ages, but it is a chance for people to give to a charitable cause which is the ALS Foundation. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), more commonly known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease”, is a very rare disease of the nervous system that weakens muscles and impacts physical function. As you may know. Lou Gehrig was a hall-of- fame baseball player who played his entire illustrious career with the New York Yankees. Nicknamed the Iron Horse, Gehrig was notorious for playing through broken bones, sickness and
  • 16. other inhibitions which would keep the average player off the field in today’s day and age. The tournament is held in the large parking lot located next to Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Spring Training complex of the New York Yankees which really brings this tournament a more home-like feel. You may be asking yourself, “What is this have to do with me?”. Well, frankly it has everything to do with you. With your financial assistance, we can help give your company some extra advertising and even introduce a whole new spectrum of customers. The best part is not only will you be able to visually see your company being advertised, but whatever money that is generated from this tournament will be directly donated to the ALS Foundation to help improve research, and hopefully someday find a cure to this terrible disease. How else can you help? You can donate equipment, food, or drink rather than money. However, when it does come to monetary donations, we do have a variety of sponsorship packages that you may in fact decide to choose from. They are: Champion Sponsor ($2000) (2):  8’ x 2.5’ banner in centerfield of each of the 4 fields.  Company logo on trophies.  Naming rights to field of your choice.  Your company’s logo will be front and center on the tournament t-shirt.  Company logo on home screen of website.  Free advertising in the tournament program. Home-Run Sponsor ($1000) (3):  Naming rights to a field.  Large banner (6’ x 2.5’) in right field.
