Future of the BBC:
A content and rhetorical comparison between
Telegraph and the UK's Parliament
Joonas Pallaoro
Case introduction:
● Difficult for media
companies to find funding
systems.
● Public broadcasters are
accused of unfair
competition
“YLE is currently competing with private media companies by essentially publishing an online
newspaper.” Jukka Viitasaari
“The BBC is completely crowding out national newspapers” George Osborne
Materials:
● Editorial from “The Daily Telegraph”
It could be considered the audience and subject of the debate with the BBC.
● Comments by John Whittingdale to the report “Future of
the BBC” by the house of commons
I wanted to analyze the policy makers that hold the power to shape the
future of Public Broadcasters.
Methodology:
● Content analysis:
in order to have a general frame as first survey on the topic.
-For this methodology I also took into analysis the chapter on competition from
the House of Commons report.
● Rhetorical analysis:
to find similarities/differences in style and invention

Results:
● Both texts present elements from forensic and epideictic
types.
● Present similar invention carried by similar usage of ethos,
pathos, and logos.
● Both have an inverted pyramid disposition: starting from
the 5 Ws and then going more into details.
