So, what’s been happening?
So, induction training underway,
planning for 2016 is progressing well,
and thanks to all those who gave me
good feedback during their exit
interviews to help us improve our
operations.
The theme for this month seemed to be
“Connect”; long talk to and from Oamaru
with the promotions officer from SDHB
who mentors young Maori prisoners and
the impact of a sense of not belonging;
presenting to Psychology Week under
the banner ‘connect’ as one of the Five
Ways to Wellbeing; speaking to the
National Volunteer Conference on
‘volunteer engagement’; reading that the
‘intergenerational gap’ is growing; all the
exit interviews where departing
volunteers said they loved being part of
YLO and where sad to leave us; and
even the impact of world events.
Joshua Becker wrote (Author of
Simplify), “People were created to be
loved. Things were created to be used.
The reason why the world is in chaos is
because things are being loved and
people are being used”. Resonated well
with my musings.
Youth Zone Otago Access Radio
Sarah and Michalla went along and
were interviewed by Jayden on 7
October.
Awesome way to support the Youth
Zone segment and help promote YLO to
the wider audience. Cheers to you
both!
National Doughraiser Fundraiser
Thanks to Jireeth for coming along to
help in North and South Dunedin
Domino stores. Thanks for those who I
texted to say we didn’t need extra hands
so not to come. And thanks to those
who came and had pizza for dinner in
support!
Here we are with the franchise owner in
South Dunedin. The National event
raised $30,000 to support the Helpline.
OUSA Craft Beer Festival
Fundraiser for YLO
OUSA selected YLO as the recipient of
the excess credit on the wristbands this
year. Ganna and I went down to help
out and promote YLO in our T-shirts.
Ganna before she cut her finger…..

and after, ouch!
Very glad she was still smiling. OUSA
raised nearly $3,500 for YLO so very
much appreciated!
NZ Volunteering Confernce
It’s starting to look like I never did
anything in Wellington other than go to
breakfast at Parliament on Tuesday
morning! And the above selfie just had
to be done! But, no, I did present on the
Monday on YLO’s “volunteering
engagement” efforts. It went really well,
people are truly amazed at the work you
all do and the effort and extent to which
you do this work. Thank you all. You
are impressive! I’m trying to get a photo
of me presenting, in case you’re all
wondering!
Admin Support for YLO
If you think the offices are getting busy,
you are right. Along with the Helpline
shifts and training shifts, we of course
have our 4 F2F practitioners, 2 case
management volunteers, Helpline
Triage, and administrative volunteers
with Donelle, Jireeth and Kris all helping
me out. But, we are now placing 3 more
volunteer roles with Volunteering
Otago’s database; Volunteer Admin
Support (help organise the training,
recruitment, databases other systems
now in place), Communication Support
and Fundraising Support. All roles will
be advertised and interviewed. But if
you know anyone suitable, steer them to
the Volunteering Otago database or get
them to contact me directly. Thanks.

We enter into that time of the year that for
some is fun and festive. But for others, it
heightens loneliness, financial pressures
and social pressures. So, keep up the good
Helpline work team. It Changes Lives.
Thanks.
