Imagine your car being able to warn you if another
vehicle has entered your left- or right-side blind
zone, or if you’re starting to drift out of your
lane and into an adjacent one. Lucerne can do
that — with an available package of leading-edge
technology only a few cars in the world can offer.
Side Blind Zone Alert. Every car on the road has
blind spots. They’re those zones on both the left
and right sides that other vehicles can move into,
and just “disappear”— no longer visible in either
the center rearview mirror or the side rearview
mirrors. In dense urban traffic it’s easy for another
car to move into your blind spot without you ever
being aware of it.
Lucerne’s Side Blind Zone Alert uses alternating
beams of radar to sweep adjacent lanes of traffic
in a 150° arc. Cars entering those zones, from
either the rear or the side, will trigger an alert,
illuminating an LED symbol in the appropriate
outside rearview mirror. So when you check that
mirror, even though you can’t see the vehicle,
you know it’s there.
The system ignores stationary objects, works in
many kinds of weather and can really reduce
stress in difficult driving situations, allowing
you to change lanes with much more confidence.
Lane Departure Warning. If you’ve ever inadver-
tently drifted into an adjacent lane of traffic, you
know how easily it can happen. A momentary
lapse of attention, a simple distraction, even
common fatigue can cause a dangerous drift into
another lane.
Lucerne’s Lane Departure Warning system can
help prevent this kind of drifting. A camera
located on the windshield, close to the rearview
mirror, reads the visible lane divider lines in
the road ahead. If the camera detects drifting
into another lane, an alert triggers both audio
and visual warnings from the instrument panel. *
Intentional steering movements, the use of turn
signals, or significant acceleration will prevent
the warnings.
*The system will alert the driver once the vehicle speed reaches
35 mph or higher and lane markings are visible to the system.

Before the first designer’s sketch ever appeared
on paper, the Lucerne development team was fix-
ated on one thing: This all-new luxury car would
have to be the quietest Buick ever. Using preci-
sion instruments, they set out to accomplish their
mission, and proceeded to develop an advanced
form of QuietTuning. It employs 26 dif ferent
technologies and tactics in service of one or
more of the following three strategies:
1. Reduce noise at its source. The most elegant
way to quiet the interior of a car is to find the
source of the noise and make it stop. Or at least
reduce the volume of noise being produced. Our
Lucerne acoustic specialists found many ways to
reduce noise at its source. For example, they
insisted on tires with a composition and tread
pattern that provide excellent traction, but which
also provide an impressive level of quietness
when rolling down the road. Our engineers also
redesigned the way the engine is coupled to the
chassis of Lucerne — double isolating it from
the body structure. So the natural vibrations of
a powerful engine don’t all resonate throughout
the car. And, during the 400-plus hours Lucerne

spent in wind tunnel testing, they discovered that
the housing for the side-view mirrors was
producing a surprising amount of noise. But by
simply squaring off the curve on the top edge of
the housing, they created a dramatic reduction in
the amount of noise produced.
2. Block the noise path. Some noise can’t be
eliminated at its source, but much of it can be
kept from finding its way into the cabin. So, in
addition to its many acoustic sealers, barriers and
shields, Lucerne also has a special laminated steel
panel behind its instrument panel. This panel
doesn’t resonate, so it won’t produce noise of its
2. own. It also creates a very effective acoustic
shield — to help block out noise from under the
hood. The laminated glass in the side windows
has a similar effect. It keeps much of the noise of
the outside world on the outside of the car. And,
once again, those side-view mirrors get extra
attention. This time, a special mirror sound barrier
is installed at the point where the mirror housing
is attached to the door, helping to block yet
another noise path.
3. Absorb noise in the cabin. Something special
is waiting for the noise that still finds its way into
3. the passenger compartment of Lucerne: Think of
it as an armada of acoustic absorbers. They’re
positioned in just the right places, so much of
the noise is absorbed before it ever reaches the
ears of the passengers.
The amazing result is a car that’s astonishingly
quiet. It is almost certainly one of the quietest
cars you have ever driven. It is truly a hushed
sanctuary from the outside world.

The preoccupation with quality and precision isn’t
limited to Lucerne’s sleek, athletic body and
luxurious, contemporary interior. Nestled under
its hood, residing within its chassis, is technology
so innovative, advanced and sophisticated, even
rocket scientists will be impressed.
Magnetic ride control. This ride management
system ingeniously uses magnetic force to
instantaneously react to changing road condi-
tions. Inside the damper (shock absorber), an
electromagnetic coil controls the alignment of
magnetically charged par ticles (represented
at lef t) suspended in a synthetic fluid. When
the particle alignment changes, the rheology
(resistance to flow) of the fluid changes — and
the damper becomes firmer or softer. So the ride
characteristics of Lucerne CXS can go from very
smooth and compliant to very firm and resistant,
or any where in bet ween. And it can change
up to 1,000 times a second, so smoothly and
unobtrusively, you won’t even notice.
Northstar 4.6L V8. Few engines achieve legen-
dar y s tatus. Welcome to one of them. This
premium, aluminum, 32-valve, dual overhead
cam powerplant is recognized and applauded
around the world for its technological refinement
and precision. It’s standard equipment on
Lucerne CXS. With 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft
torque, the Northstar V8 moves from a stop with
the kind of command and smoothness only a
big V8 can provide. At higher speeds, its vast
reserves of power and instantaneous response
are ready whenever you decide to use them.
3.8L 3800 Series III V6. With over 25 million sold,
this is the most proven engine in GM ’s inventory.
The Series III version in Lucerne adds more
