A History of Aboriginal Sydney sought to digitally deliver the past to the present.
For more than two centuries, the history of the Indigenous people of the Sydney
region remained locked away in archives, held within families, or obliterated by the
dominant culture. Now, with community approval and co-operation the project, A
history of Aboriginal Sydney, used digital tools to restore Sydney's Aboriginal
history in forms which can be appreciated and shared by the families themselves, by
high school students and by everyone who values the history and culture of
Australia's first peoples. This project was based on the developing knowledge
management platform, which integrates historical records, methods and tools of e-
scholarship, and solutions for delivering research data for different uses. Each of the
six geographical regions includes a calendar of events, historical posters, interactive
maps, videoed interviews, site visits and other features. An important priority for the
project was to give equal weight to the achievements of the descendants of
traditional owners, and to those who later came to live in Sydney. The project was
supported by the Department of History, University of Sydney, and funded by an
Australia Research Council, Australian Professorial Fellowship (Peter Read as Chief
Investigator) and Discovery Grant. The project received a National Trust (NSW)
Heritage Award for Research and Investigation.
As part of the project research team, Barnes digitally delivered the past to the
present for the North West geographical region. She employed methods such as
linking data with interactive timelines and digital maps to enable online learning and
information discovery on the website. The ‘North West’ region was the final
research stage in this five year project. It was completed in 2013.
