1. Crisis Communication
Crisis Situation
With Girls Like Us being an active program for young girls it is vital that there is a crisis
management plan already implemented for immediate use in case of an emergency. For example,
a crisis situation that could occur during the six-week program could be one of the girls having
an asthma attack. An asthma attack causes tightening of muscles around your airways and causes
symptoms such as difficulty breathing, wheezing, shortness of breath and more. If a girl were to
start getting these symptoms GHFC would immediately treat her with the child’s inhaler and
contact her parents. If the problems became more serious, GHFC would have to call 911. If a
problem like this occurred many of the participants in the program could get scared and not fully
understand that the girl who had the attack had prior health related issues. It is important that
GHFC had a crisis plan in case one of the staff members did not know the symptoms of an
asthma attack and the child had to go to the hospital.
Internal Memo

Subject: Mild Crisis occurs during Girls Like Us program
During this previous Saturday’s Girls Like Us program, one of the participants suddenly had a
mild asthma attack. Thankfully, the girl who suffered the attack is fine, however many of the
other participants were shaken from the incident. It is our duty as staff members of GHFC to
make sure that these girls feel comfortable coming back to the program. We ask you to join us in
teaching the girls that asthma is a prior health-related condition that not all people have and that
it can be controlled with the proper use of an inhaler.
When the incident occurred the parents were immediately notified and we plan on spending the
first 10 minutes of our next class explaining what asthma is and how people with asthma still can
be active.
Due to this crisis, we will be holding a one hour meeting on Monday, March 31 at 9:30 a.m. to
educate the staff about the symptoms of an asthma attack and how to handle the situation
appropriately.
Thank you,
Mindy Miller

Statement to Media
“This past Saturday one of our young participants of Girls Like Us had a sudden asthma attack
during our hip-hop session. We were truly lucky that one of the staff members noticed the girl’s
symptoms and we were able to get her inhaler in a timely manner before the situation worsen.
We immediately notified the girl’s parents and informed the other parents of the situation. We
plan on taking the first 10 minutes out of next Saturdays session to debrief the girls about what
asthma is and how it is a prior health related condition. We hope the girls are not too shaken
from the situation and can go on having a fun time while being active,” stated Mindy Miller.
