Dear Human Resources:
I am currently a health care student studying the personal support worker program at Durham College. I’m
scheduled to finish the program in April 2016, and once finished I plan on entering the field of the exciting world
of being a PSW. During my studies I have learned about my scope of practice, rights and delegation, elder abuse,
and many strategies when dealing with responsive behaviors. Also during my studies I have received multiple
certificates. Some of those include, Alzheimer’s society, Me & U-First, Restorative Care certificate, St Peter’s
Feeding Certificate, and I have also been mask fitted. As my semester continues I will be achieving more
certificates, one which will specialize in fundamentals of hospice and palliative care.
I have accomplished a lot during the time at Durham College. I’ve spent time in a long term care facility where I
worked twice a week on the lockdown unit. I was assisting with ADL’s such as bathing, brushing teeth, toileting,
and personal care. With the months to come I am heading back to the long term care facility, and will have the
opportunity to be placed within a community setting. This will enhance my skills and knowledge as I become a
better student, but more importantly, a better PSW.
At Durham College, I am also a peer mentor for first year PSW students. This requires me to be a leader and help
guide other students to success. I was also the successful candidate for becoming the lab IPR resource for the PSW
program. This position I was chosen for makes me be up to date and skillful as I am to help fellow PSW students to
perfect the lab skills they learn in class.
With a great attitude and personality I believe I’d be an asset for your health care team in the future. I am polite,
mature, helpful, and very compassionate. I have leadership skills, very punctual, and have respect as I promote
dignity, independence, privacy, preference, and promote safety. The skills I learned will have a great impact on me
in the future as I enter health care, but within your organization I hope to become the best PSW I can possibly
become.
I look forward to meeting you and having a scheduled interview.
Best regards,
Jesse Callaghan
