When the Heart Bleeds
by
Letty Jacinto-Lopez
That Friday, a newsbreak: A fashion
model fell from the 28th floor of a condo
17. *Para broken-hearted lang, nag suicide na? Sobra naman ang
drama, hindi na uso yan.
*Spare the rod and you have an overprotected child who
cannot handle rejection and disappointments.
*When you are in the middle of an episode of depression, you
really feel like you are in the pits of despair at mahirap umahon
doon ng ganon-ganon nalang. Wala ka nga in your right mind,
that’s why she jumped to her death. RIP
*She had a chemical imbalance in her brain. Don’t ever judge a
person why she did that. Don’t call her mababaw, baliw, sira
ulo, weak. You don’t know what it’s like.
Helena was diagnosed with a bi-polar disorder.

(Editor’s note: On May 25, 2002, Natasha Goulbourn, 27, died in
Hong Kong from over-medication after a bout of depression. Here,
for the first time, Natasha’s mother, fashion designer Jean
Goulbourn, writes about the painful episodes that transpired after
her daughter’s death.)
MANILA, Philippines – No, God, no! I can’t accept that Tasha’s gone.
Please give me closure. Give me signs. Allow her to talk to me. Do
You exist? Are You really there? How could You let it happen? Why
call her home to You at her prime? Why lend her to me for so short
a time? What about her marching down the aisle as a bride? And
the six children that she wished for she wrote me in her Mother’s
Day card. What about the Goulbourn grandson she promised her
dad? She said she’d marry the man who would say yes in baptizing
her first son with a hyphenated surname, ____-Goulbourn, so the
family neme can continue! What about her sister, her best friend,
who she was going to be a maid of honor for?”
Embracing her pillow in her room, I had no tears; just this random
conversation with God and with her.
20. Beauty And Brains
Aristotle says there’s no “great genius without a mixture of madness.”
Taking it literally, some of the most beautiful, most eminent, most
celebrated personalities in the world of television, literature, science,
health, music, society, and cinema, wrestled against mental disorders—
and iconic they became.
• English poet Virginia Woolf suffered from four major breakdowns
before drowning herself at the age of 59. She had manic-depressive
illness.
• Diana, The Princess of Wales, long struggled with bulimia and
depression before her tragic death in a car crash.
• Many speculated that Marilyn Monroe had either bipolar disorder or
borderline personality disorder (BPD), which ran in her family.
• Wordsmiths Robert Frost, Hans Christian Anderson, Edgar Allan Poe,
Ernest Hemingway, and T.S. Eliot all wrestled against bipolar disorder.
21. Harry Potter author JK Rowling spent nine months under cognitive behavioral therapy
when she had suicidal tendencies and depression as a single mother in her 20s.
• Disney teen pop star Demi Lovato struggles with anorexia, bulimia, and bipolar
disorder.

Hoffman suffered from mental illness.
• Singers and musicians like Britney Spears, Dona Summer, Pete Wentz, Billy Joel, and
Frank Sinatra all admitted their fight against bipolar disorder.
• Celebrated men like Winston Churchill, Vincent Van Gogh, and Mel Gibson all
suffered from bipolar disorder.
• Many believed that American poet Emily Dickinson’s often dark and gloomy poetry
suggested her bipolar disorder.
22. •Historical geniuses like Abraham Lincoln, Buzz Aldrin, Leo Tolstoy,
Michelangelo, Charles Dickens, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Edgar Allan Poe, and
Isaac Newton had possible symptoms of mental illnesses.
• Beyonce Knowles’ younger sister, Solange, has always been a ball of energy,
but the real culprit is her attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
• British screenwriter and Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson has
occasional mild depression.
• Vivien Leigh, who rose to fame after her portrayal as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone
With the Wind, had symptoms of bipolar disorder before her miscarriage in
