[PFC Rodriguez] What the hell is going on, man?
[SGT Shoemaker] I don’t know. Just get in the damn Humvee.
[PFC Sowash] This thing only has a quarter-tank. We need to gas up.
[PV2 Wodzinski] I didn’t even get my ruck, it got left at the checkpoint. All the ammo is in there.
[SGT Shoemaker] Everyone, shut the hell up, we’re leaving. Sowash, get us out of here.
[PFC Sowash] Where? Where to?
[SGT Shoemaker] Just out of here for now. Get us to the interstate and go east. Rodriguez, try and get
someone on the radio.
[PFC Rodriguez] Man, I tried, nobody is answering. I’m on the freq you told me, but nothing is there.
Nobody.
[SGT Shoemaker] Ski, climb in the back and check those jerry-cans, see if they are full.
[PFC Rodriguez] I’m not even getting any cell signal, dude.
[PFC Sowash] There’s another Humvee over there, in that cluster of POV’s. Maybe someone is there we
can link up with.
[SGT Showmaker] Try it. Just keep all the doors barred. Drive by and see, and be ready to bolt.
[PFC Sowash] Ok.
[PFC Rodriguez] Man, what is with all the dead people? Everybody’s frigging dead. Cars on fire, buildings
on fire, wrecks everywhere.
[SGT Shoemaker] Ok, Swish, hold up here… yeah, that’s good. Just stop. I don’t see anyone in there.
[PFC Sowash] Ok. Yeah, nobody moving. Looks like an HHC Humvee. Doors open but nobody’s home.
[PV2 Wodzinski] I’ve got a guy over here, on fire.
[PFC Rodriguez] That helps.
[PV2 Wodzinski] Shut up.
[SGT Shoemaker] No movement? Anybody?
[PFC Sowash] Nope
[PFC Rodriguez] Nope.
[PV2 Wodzinski] No, sergeant.
[SGT Shoemaker] Ok, I’m going to get out and check the vehicle for weapons, ammo, fuel etc. Ski, you
get up on the .50 Cal and cover me. Swish, you be ready to get us out of here if we need to. Rod, just
keep trying the damn radio.
Sergeant Shoemaker gets out with his weapon at the ready. He moves carefully to the Humvee and
crawls inside.
Moments later, Sergeant Shoemaker is suddenly fighting for his life to get out of the Humvee while a
mutilated woman is clawing and biting him. Shoemaker falls to the ground fighting, but she is on him.
[PFC Sowash] JESUS CHRIST, SHOOT DAMMIT! DO SOMETHING!
[PFC Rodriguez] My god man! Frigging fire now, Ski!
Private Wodzinski is stunned, but he eventually realizes he is at the gun and racks the bolt. Rodriguez
opens the door to get out, his weapon coming up to fire. He switches the selector from safe to fire…
but Wodzinski triggers a burst from the .50 Caliber HMG. The woman is torn apart, as is Sergeant
Shoemaker. The rounds punch through both people, the Humvee and the vehicle next to it, and fire
spreads.
Rodriguez is knocked down away from the burst as the barrel of the MG was only a couple feet from
his head.
Previously unmoving bodies start slowly animating.
[PV2 Wodzinski] ROD!
[PFC Sowash] My god, cease fire! CEASE FIRE! What have you done? Oh god.
Rodriguez screams on the ground, holding his head, in a fetal position. He’s covered in blood spatter.
[PFC Sowash] SARGE!
[PV2 Wodzinski] …
Wodzinski is frozen, stunned in shock. Sowash gets out and runs around the front of the Humvee. He
sees the carnage of Sergeant Shoemaker, and then sees Rodriguez balled up next to the vehicle. He
goes to Rodriguez, but Rodriguez is wide-eyed, holding his head and screaming. Sowash grabs him
and checks him for wounds.
Sowash notices the previously “dead” moving, getting up, and turning his way.
[PFC Sowash] Come on Rod! We’ve got to GO!
Rodriguez is unresponsive. His eyes are locked onto the corpse of Sergeant Shoemaker and a woman
whose face looks half-gone, her hands with the flesh worn off and exposed finger bones, twitching to
grasp even now.
[PFC Sowash] ROD! WE HAVE TO GO NOW!
Sowash grabs Rodriguez, gets him to his feet and shoves him in the Humvee. He grabs the weapons
and kicks the door shut. The door doesn’t catch and it bounces open again. He shuffles his, Rodriguez’s
and Sergeant Shoemaker’s M-4’s to one arm, and shuts the door forcibly. The shambling corpses are
now clearly moving towards the Humvee.
[PFC Sowash] SKI! JESUS, FIRE THE DAMNED GUN! COVER ME!
Wodzinski snaps out of his stupor and fires a burst at a group of shambling corpses approaching the
driver’s side of the vehicle. Sowash tosses the M-4’s into the running Humvee and jumps in after them,
slamming his door shut. The corpses are closing in on all sides. Wodzinski continues to fire. Rodriguez
has pulled his knees up to his chest and still has the same shocked look on his face.
Sowash guns the gas and plows into the small crowd of horribly burned, mutilated bodies that
shouldn’t be walking. Bodies are crunched beneath the wheels and get caught in the brush guard.
Wodzinski screams.
[PFC Sowash] SKI!
[PV2 Wodzinski] ARHHHHHhhh! Help MEEEE!!! It’s got me. SWISH!
[PFC Sowash] ROD! Help him! For chrissakes Rod, help him!
Rodriguez is gone. He is in complete shock and shows no response whatsoever. The Humvee swerves
to avoid wrecked and stationary vehicles. Wodzinski thrashes in the cupola, and fights to pull himself
back in. Whatever is on top with Wodzinski falls to the side of the Humvee, still holding onto his
victim. Wodzinski continues to fight for his life, bare-handed. Sowash sees a truck in his path and
swipes it with the side of the Humvee. The corpse is ripped away, and Wodzinski is pulled up, but then
slides down back into the cupola. He gets up to close the top hatch, and then slumps into the seat
behind the driver.
[PFC Sowash] Is it gone? Did I get it?
[PV2 Wodzinski] Yeah, you got it. Almost got me too. Bastard nearly yanked me right out of the hatch.
[PFC Sowash] You okay?
[PV2 Wodzinski] Yeah, I’ll live. A little beat up. Scratches and bruises. That thing bit the crap out of me.
But otherwise…I’m good.
[PFC Sowash] Check on Rod. He’s gone all brainlocked on me. See if he’s wounded.
[PV2 Wodzinski] Checking…
Wodzinski crawls over the center hump and starts checking Rodriguez for wounds.
[PV2 Wodzinski] Oh god.
[PFC Sowash] What?
[PV2 Wodzinski] …
[PFC Sowash] WHAT??? Frigging talk to me Ski.
[PV2 Wodzinski] I… I killed Sergeant Shoe. My god, what did I do?
[PFC Sowash] Keep it together, Ski. Just check Rod!
[PV2 Wodzinski] What have I done? My god, I’m so sorry.
[PFC Sowash] IS ROD OKAY???
[PV2 Wodzinski] He’s fine. He doesn’t seem hit at all. He’s just…
[PFC Sowash] Just relax, Ski, it’ll be okay. We just need to get down the road and find a place to hole up
for a while. Then make contact… with anyone at this point. Just don’t flip out on me.
Wodzinski nods.
[PFC Sowash] Okay??? Are you nodding?
[PV2 Wodzinski] Yeah, sorry. Okay.
[PFC Sowash] It’s gonna be fine. Just chill the hell out.
[PV2 Wodzinski] Yeah, it’s gonna be fine.
Wodzinski looks at his bloodied hand. The guy almost bit his little finger off. He grabs his medkit,
opens it and wraps the gauze and cravat tightly around the wound to staunch the bleeding.
[PV2 Wodzinski] Yeah, it’s gonna be fine.
