 Academic Detachment- the tendency to lose
sight of academics as the demands and
environment pull athletes towards their sport.
 Integrity of Higher Education
"I am in favor of paying collegiate athletes, and I say that
because football and basketball -- and I use those two
because they're the biggest revenue-generating sports --
provide a lot of finances for the school. They promote the
school. They increase enrollment for the school. And the
life blood of those sports are the players, who work hard,
who train their body and their mind. The athletes are put
under a microscope in terms of all their actions within the
community and at the school and in class. It's very
analogous to a job. I feel the players should be
compensated at least at a minimum for the work they do
to enhance the reputation, the monies and the prestige of
the institution for which they play.“
-Myron Rolle
 In 1929 the Carnegie Foundation cited
commercialization as the source of cheating
and financial scandal.
“The heart of the problem facing college sports was
commercialization: an interlocking network that included
expanded press coverage, public interest, alumni
involvement, and recruiting abuses. The victim was the
student-athlete in particular, the diminishing of
educational and intellectual values in general.”
-Authors of Carnegie Report
 The Arms Race: competition for best coaches
and facilities
 Only a handful of universities generate
surplus revenue.
 Without financial assistance, the average FBS
school would have lost $5.7 million in 2005.
NCAA and Knight commission say cost
increases may be unsustainable. May have to:
Transfer funds from other programs
Drop sports all together
 Find new ways of generating revenues(student
fees)
 Many feel that large spectator sports (football
and basketball) are necessary for institutional
advancement and to shape public perception
Flutie Factor:
does success on the
field translate to
success off the field?
UNC Charlotte offer different rationale for
adding football program:
 Promotes “ownership” of university among alumni
and charlotte area offering “secondary benefits”
including contributing to the school’s reputation.
 “Enrich the student experience here, enliven school
spirit, and serve as one more bond of engagement
between the students and their university”
-Entertainment value
-Builds school spirit
-Institutional advancement
-Student recruitment
-Publicity
-Academic reputation
-Government relations
-Connecting to stakeholders
use athletics as a “front porch” making institutions
more accessible
