FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 30, 2015, New Jersey
Gloria J. Arnold, author of GUIOU The Other Blacks: The Afro-Jamaican Presence
in Guatemala, is helping to reignite people’s passion in genealogical research,
while encouraging them to go on their own self-discovery journey.
Gloria says, “People, like trees, need roots. Not the roots we have adopted or were
given, but those roots from which we descend. Without roots a tree will die.
Without roots a people will cease to exist.”
Family history is an important journey for any civilization, just as it was for Gloria
when she returned to Guatemala after a 50 year absence. While exploring the
place of her birth, she discovered the Afro-Jamaicans of Guatemala had no
identity and had become virtually invisible in their own country.
Gloria became determined to reclaim and restore their legacy, and in doing so,
has enriched Guatemala’s cultural diversity by offering them information on this
other dimension.
After the completion of her book, GUIOU The Other Blacks: The Afro-Jamaican
Presence in Guatemala, Gloria soon realized the need for a second edition, with a
Spanish translation. GUIOU Los Otros Negros, La Presencia Afrojamiaquina en
Guatemala, was published in Guatemala and became a best seller within weeks of
being released. As a testament to its popularity, it remains on today’s bestseller
list, and is a major source of information on a forgotten people.
The book is a heartfelt tribute to her heritage, and reflects her appreciation of the
rich cultural society of the Guiou. Arnold explores their struggles and
accomplishments and reveals how they managed to excel in their chosen fields.
Gloria remembered her beginnings in Guatemala in a colonia of English speaking
ancestors, who have disappeared historically, and who remain invisible in today’s
modern Guatemala. As a result, she became determined to honor the Guiou of
the past, and teach people the important legacy these people left behind. She’s
done this through informative pictures and personal anecdotes, which offer the
reader both oral and recorded historical documents.
The reader will be mesmerized by the biographies of luminaries and former
leaders, along with an extensive genealogy of Afro-Jamaican Guatemalan
surnames.
Readers are also introduced to a wide variety of local delicacies, which include
Fish Escovitch, Fried Breatfruit, Bulla Cake and Sorrel wine.
GUIOU The Other Blacks: The Afro-Jamaican Presence in Guatemala, is available
on Amazon, and in most major book stores.
Its Spanish translation, GUIOU Los Otros Negros, La Presencia Afrojamiaquina en
