Auction veteran Jana DeHart brings her vast storytelling ability to behind-
the-scenes videos that highlight the personalities of car collecting.
Like Rick Moore, Juli DeHart Smith and 64 others like this.
Regular watchers of Barrett-Jackson auctions on SPEED most likely have noticed the diminutive,
white-haired woman busily moving about the stage, taking in all the action and speaking with the key
players, usually with a big smile on her face.
That would be SPEED’s own Jana DeHart, whose job title of Senior Producer hardly covers the depth
of her artistic video contributions to SPEED’s coverage of Barrett-Jackson.
Nor does it capture her deep knowledge and
understanding of the sprawling auction events,
the individual buyers and sellers, and in
particular, what goes on behind the scenes.
DeHart’s luscious videos are shown during
SPEED’s live coverage of Barrett-Jackson
auctions, highlighting some of the special
collector cars and the interesting people who
have made them parts of their lives.
“I’m a people person; I just really love to talk to
people and hear their stories, and then present their stories,” DeHart said as she took a break from
editing. “That’s the most compelling thing, really, to hear people talk about the cars. They really bring

them to life.”
Part of her role as Senior Producer is creating the Barrett-Jackson Special Edition shows, as well as
handling all the high-end features and in-depth programming connected with the four annual auction
events.
DeHart started working for SPEED in 2005, and she was soon dedicated to compiling on video the
many behind-the-scenes car stories that go into each Barrett-Jackson auction. As busy as she is
during the auctions themselves, most of her work is done before and after each event, making
contacts, gathering material and traveling around the country to where the car collectors open up
their garages, and often their lives, for her to put on video.
“And the cars are so beautiful, and there are so
many ways to shoot them to show what they are,”
she said. “And there are so many ways to put
music and things with them to bring out their best,
combined with how they sound and the way they
move, their colors and their design and their
history.”
DeHart began her career in New York City, fresh
out of college working on film features. “Then I
started working in television and worked my way
up. I’ve had a lot of behind-the-scenes
experience, such as behind the scenes of Tina
Turner’s world tour.”
Part of her early career was spent working with Rick Miner before he became SPEED’s senior vice
president of production and network operations, and executive producer.
“We worked together for 30 years on various projects ranging from the Magic Kingdom at Disney to
The Producers opening on Broadway,” Miner recalled.
Miner, who heads up SPEED’s coverage of Barrett-Jackson with his signature combination of
intensity and humor, praised DeHart for her unique abilities.
“She is the best storyteller I know,” Miner said. “Jana can get people to speak and honestly show
their emotion and connection to something like no other producer I’ve ever worked with. No one is
better at telling a story without embellishment or device. No one is better at telling a story through
natural sound and pictures, and telling the whole story.
“And she has an intimate understanding of the people at the auction, whether they are the
consigners, the bidders or the Barrett-Jackson people themselves.”
