8. The Open Self – represents all the information, behaviors, attitudes, feelings, desires, motivation, and ideas that you and others
know. The type of information here might range from your name, skin color, and sex to your age, political and religious affiliations,
and financial situation. Your open self will vary in size depending on the situation you’re in and the person with whom you’re
interacting. Some people, for example, make you feel very comfortable and supported; to them, you open yourself wide, but to
others you may prefer to leave most of yourself closed.
The Blind Self – represents all the things about yourself that others know but you are unaware. This may vary from the relatively
insignificant habit of saying “You know,” to things as significant as your defense mechanisms; you will judge yourself by your
intentions whereas others will judge you by your behavior. For example, you perceive yourself as friendly and welcoming; however,
you get feedback that you rarely say good morning or that you greet some staff members but not others. Ultimately, you will be

9. perceived as not being able to relate well with the staff. Feedback about this behavior might cause you to become defensive and thus cause
you to have a very large blind self‐concerning the incongruence between your internal beliefs regarding your intentions compared with your
outward behavior.
The Hidden Self – contains all that you know of yourself and of others that you keep secret. In any interaction, this area includes everything
you don’t want to reveal, whether it’s relevant or irrelevant to the conversation. The vast majority of people keep certain aspects of their
lives hidden and disclose others; they make disclosures to some people and not to others.
The Unknown Self – represents truths about yourself that neither you nor others know. This area is mostly revealed by the fact that you’re
constantly learning things about yourself that you didn’t know before. For example, you become defensive when someone asks you a
question or voices disagreement, or that you compliment others in the hope of being complimented back.
