Magnificent road race
puts Alberton on the map
T
HE 34th annual Alberton Road Race,
since the inauguration in 1982, lived
up to expectations as one of the most
popularhalf-marathonsand10kmruns
on the official road race calendar.
This magnificent race, on the last Sunday of
November, put Alberton on the map with more
than1500entries,a20percentimprovementon
theusualnotmorethan1200runnersinthepast
few years. A total of 200 runners additionally
took the road in the shorter fun run.
In the 10 km race, Gustav Roos from Born
2 Run Athletics Club, near Midrand, crossed
the finish line first in 34:12, with Terrance Low
(Brooks), runner-up in 34:47, and neighbour-
ing Germiston Callies' Emmanuel Mavuma
third in 34:56. Alberton's Clinton Swanepoel’s
fast time of 31:05, last year, is still standing in
the record books for the 10km. Other winners
from surrounding clubs who ended up on the
the podium are: Thuli Mbatha from Katlehong
was second in the women's section in 41:02,
behind another Born 2 Race winner, Maphuti
Phaka in 39:44. Thuli was also the first veteran
woman 40 to 49 years.
Barend Vorster from Marais Viljoen, also
known as Barries, took over from last year’s
junior winner, Dyllan van der Merwe, also from
Marais Viljoen, in a brilliant time of 35:48.
André Jansen from the South, in Gauteng
Striders' green colours, came in at 40:58 and
won the grand masters race for 60 and over,
while Bedfordview’s Tony Silva once again took
the first masters prize with his time of 36:35.
The 21.1 km saw another local winner, last
year's runner-up, Thabo Mataung, winning in
a time of 72:13. Sipho Ncube from Maxed Elite
finishedsecondoverallin72:42,withwellknown
track star Juan van Deventer third in 72:48.
FrancoisJoubertfromHoërskoolRandburgwas
first junior in 79:42. Kenyan athlete Jennifer
Koech, in Nedbank colours, won the women’s
race in 84:22.
