Synopsis of Research
My early research has focused on the peace processes in Israel and Northern
Ireland. The research, published in 2006 (Global Liberalism, Local Populism;
Peace and Conflict in Israel/Palestine and Northern Ireland, Syracuse University
2006), examined the influence of globalization, and the social-economic changes
it entails, on peace processes in Israel and Northern Ireland. In 2008 the book was
awarded the Ernest-Otto Czempiel Prize from the Frankfurt Peace Institute, for
the Best Book of Peace Research.
My new research has shifted "inwards" to domestic policy making but continues
to explore the relations between economic changes, the politics of conflicts and
policy making. The first research I am currently engaged in examines the impact
of economic changes on church-state relations and existing arrangements.
Looking at Israel and elsewhere I am interested to learn how the changes of a
market society influence the relations between religious and secular and what
possibilities are there for new policies and institutions that would prevent conflict.
16
The research that began in 2006 has yielded several publications and a book with
Cambridge University Press.
My second field of research concerns public policy in a multicultural state and
society. This research aims to study the role of institutions as causes for ethno-
cultural conflicts but also as potential response for the challenges raised by
linguistic, ethnic, religious and cultural differences that translate into a variety of
challenges that Israel and other states face. A preliminary research in Canada
allowed me to study questions of policing in multicultural societies. This research
is continued in Israel and involves work with the Israeli police. This research
continues with an extensive study of Israeli police (ISF grant) and a comparative
study of policing in Israel and the US (Russel Sage grant).
Overall, I am interested on questions of institutions as tools of policy making and
their ability to reduce conflicts within states between cultural groups. In the next
years, therefore, I plan to develop my field of study in public policy by studying
the different relations between economic changes, globalization, multiculturalism
and secularization and their relation to policy making and to further develop
research and teaching methods in diversity management.

The research, published in 2006 (Global Liberalism, Local Populism; Peace and Conflict in Israel/Palestine and Northern Ireland, Syracuse University 2006), examined the influence of globalization, and the social-economic changes it entails, on peace processes in Israel and Northern Ireland. In 2008 the book was awarded the Ernest-Otto Czempiel Prize from the Frankfurt Peace Institute, for the Best Book of Peace Research. My new research has shifted "inwards" to domestic policy making but continues to explore the relations between economic changes, the politics of conflicts and policy making. The first research I am currently engaged in examines the impact of economic changes on church-state relations and existing arrangements. Looking at Israel and elsewhere I am interested to learn how the changes of a market society influence the relations between religious and secular and what possibilities are there for new policies and institutions that would prevent conflict.
  • 16. 16 The research that began in 2006 has yielded several publications and a book with Cambridge University Press. My second field of research concerns public policy in a multicultural state and society. This research aims to study the role of institutions as causes for ethno- cultural conflicts but also as potential response for the challenges raised by linguistic, ethnic, religious and cultural differences that translate into a variety of challenges that Israel and other states face. A preliminary research in Canada allowed me to study questions of policing in multicultural societies. This research is continued in Israel and involves work with the Israeli police. This research continues with an extensive study of Israeli police (ISF grant) and a comparative study of policing in Israel and the US (Russel Sage grant). Overall, I am interested on questions of institutions as tools of policy making and their ability to reduce conflicts within states between cultural groups. In the next years, therefore, I plan to develop my field of study in public policy by studying the different relations between economic changes, globalization, multiculturalism and secularization and their relation to policy making and to further develop research and teaching methods in diversity management.
