Greg’s Shingle
What’s A Shingle?
• Before the advent of mass advertising,
merchants, lawyers, doctors displayed
their profession with a sign, or shingle
outside their establishmentoutside their establishment.
• In our case a “Shingle” is another way to
show our beliefs, assumptions, and
values.

On Learning
• Active Learning
• Learner Focused
• ExperientialExperiential
On Learning
• Planning for Learning … scaffolding –
that is intentional
• Reflection
T f f L i ti• Transfer of Learning … new connections
based on experience and testing ideas
• Assess Transfer of Learning … what
can be done and not just what is known
On Learning
• Connections to Greater World
Research by J.D. Bransford et.
al. (2000) calculated that based
on 180 school days (each
school day = 6.5 hrs) that the
average time spent by a child ataverage time spent by a child at
school was 14% of their
life. The rest of their time was
divided between sleeping (33%)
and over half (53%) at home or
in the community. Of their time
at home, one-third was
estimated to be in front of a
television set (over 3% more
time than at school).
* 17.5% Watching TV … this number may be
low, why?

On Technology Related to Learning
• Why Technology?: Technology is part of
a child’s life – making connections to their
life as part of the learning process
• Role of Schools: Children will learn about
technology regardless of what schools do.
Schools have an obligation to help
children use technology wisely, including
the development of healthy and moral
values specific to technology
On Technology Related to Learning
• Change
– Move from “answer-filled expert” to
“accomplished novice” (1)
– Change twice: reality (something) and our
perception (view) (2)
– Innovation delivers something new to an
existing system vs. Creativity that changes
the system (2)

researchers)

On Technology Related to Learning
• Role With Learning: how technology aligns
with the learning process? Not just with what
skills are necessary to use a specific
technology. KEY questions:
– Does technology support inquiry?
– Enhance communication & collaboration?
– Extend access to resources?
– Guide student to analyze and visualize data?
– Enable product development?
– Encourage expression of ideas?

On Technology Related to Learning
• Role With Learning, A Caution: Technology
is not always the answer
• Collaboration and Communications : “Like a
text book or any other cultural object,y j
technology resources for education …
functions in a social environment mediated by
learning conversations with peers and
teachers.”
“How People Learn”, National Research Council, pg 230 (2000).
What Is Your Shingle?
This is what this course is all about.
• Look at how technology affects us.
• See how technology can help learners
(children and adults)( )
• Examine examples of integration
• Reflect
• Communicate and collaborate x
