1. What’s in there?
Paul was tidying up his wardrobe when he found a strange box in it.
He called his wife, Julia, who was working at the time, to ask her if she knew anything about the
box.
“No,” she said “I don’t know anything about that box. Can you open it and see what’s inside?” She
asked Paul.
“Let’s see. I’ll open it”, he said over the phone as he started to take out all of the things that were
inside the box.
“There is a lamp.”
“There are two pencils.”
“Are there any photographs?” Asked Julia
“No, there aren’t any photos”, said Paul
“Why do you want to know if there are any photos?”, asked Paul
“Because I remember my mother had a box where she kept all of our photos”, answered Julia.
Paul continued taking things out of the box.
“There are two pairs of scissors.”
“Is there a ring?”, asked Julia
“No, there isn’t a ring”, answered Paul. “There is a bracelet instead.”
“A bracelet? Is it one of my bracelets?”, asked Julia.
“No, not that I remember. You’ll have to see for yourself”, answered Paul as he continued to grab
things from the box.
“There are several envelopes.”
“Are there many letters?”, asked Julia.
“No, there aren’t any letters. The envelopes are brand new.”
“What a pity! I really thought that could be my mother’s box full of memories. But, now I don’t
have a clue whose box it might be”, said Julia.
“Oh”, said Paul “I know whose box it is.”
“Whose?”, asked Julia.
“It’s Betty’s box”, replied Paul.
“How do you know?”, asked Julia.
“Because there is notebook that has her name on the cover. This box must have been here since we
moved to the new house and we never unpacked it”, answered Paul.
“You are right. Mystery solved. said Julia.”
