Coping with a changing environment - the role the media can play (Sonia Whitehead)

Editor's Notes

  • #2 How do we know about preparing for extreme weather Breaking down the concept Understanding barriers and drivers Understanding audiences Making content relevant for people Adapting programme content
  • #3 have the biggest influence over how likely people are to take action Structural Equation Modelling This is followed by their level of knowledge on how to take action, and whether they discuss taking action with others. Two pathways to action: People who regularly watch Amrai Pari are more likely to report higher awareness of risk, and this perceived risk is then associated with a greater likelihood of taking action. People who regularly watch Amrai Pari are less likely to feel they need government support which is associated with increases in self-efficacy and collective efficacy, which are associated in turn small increases in the uptake of resilient behaviour.
  • #4 “I saw a person building a potato storage house. I liked the programme and felt inspired to build one too.” “ Amrai Pari teaches us a lot of new things; we can apply them for ourselves as well as we can [use them to] advise other villagers." Amrai Pari Viewer, Female, Rural, North West Regression analysis also showed that: Exposure to Amrai Pari was associated with self efficacy (confidence to take action) Exposure to the PSA was associated with increased awareness of risk, increaed knowledge and talking with others about taking action People who regularly watched Amrai Pari or the saw the PSA were more likely to take action than those who didn’t, even when controlling for age, education and income. (Regression analysis) Amrai Pari has been equally popular amongst women and men across all three series.

  • #8 Add a bit on community aims of Amrai Pare This is in line with the objectives of Amrai Pari, which were to increase awareness about why it is important to prepare for crisis, to increase people’s knowledge about the adaptations they can make, and to motivate them to take action. The objective of the PSA was to create awareness that working together is more likely to achieve results as a preparedness measure for extreme weather events.    Added these objectives based on Lisa’s comments (got the objective from Richard), I’m not sure it explains much…
  • #11 78% of audience felt Amrai Pari improved their understanding of how to cope with weather related changes 70% listeners in Tanzania said the programme increased their knowledge of climate related resilience issues
  • #12 "Amrai Pari teaches us a lot of new things; we can apply them for ourselves as well as we can [use them to] advise other villagers." • #13 These slides outline main findings in Tanzania and Bangladesh. We also have impact data from the Cocoa Farming work in the Sierra Leone country slides. Other resilience projects are currently in progress and don’t have impact data e.g. air we breathe, Braced Myanmar and Klahan 9 in Cambodia
  • #14 Feeling at risk and feeling confident to act felt supported by organisations or people around them had higher knowledge of how to deal with climate related risks were most likely to take action.

  • #17 The resilience section has our work for Climate Asia
  • #18 The data under resilience is XXXX and YYYY
  • #19 This portal houses data from all our quantitative governance and resilience surveys from the Global Grant (and the local Tanzania resilience survey). It will also feature reports, research summaries, data visualisations and questionnaires for each country. So it is a resource for country teams as well as people externally. http://dataportal.bbcmediaaction.org/site/ This site is ready –it will be launched in early March but you can start to use the site.
