Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955) is one of the most original and unusual contemporary photographers. As an artist, as a critic, as a teacher and as a writer, he has devoted his life to research into the language of photography and produced a body of unique theoretical work which questions artistic creation and the perception of the viewer. Awarded the Hasselblad Foundation International Prize in 2013, he is internationally considered to be one of Spain´s most prestigious photographic artists.
His images go beyond mere appearances. The digital treatment and the interaction of his works with the viewer question the very objectivity and veracity of photography, always considered to be a true reflection of reality. The role of the artist, their intentions, their principles and the purposes of the images are just some of the concerns which are a constant feature of his career. The artist proposes and the viewer disposes.
The Fundación Banco Santander has the privilege to present Gastropoda, an unpublished work comprising 16 of Joan Fontcuberta´s photographs which come to light for their first time in this Artist’s Sketchbook. The series brings together invitations from museums and art galleries collected by the artist and transformed into more or less recognizable vestiges as the result of the ravenous action of wild snails who become thus co-authors of the work.
