CURRENT SITUATION OF THE TRAINING ON VECTORS
Over 240 institutions with biology/entomological programs, in over 65 countries, were
analyzed in detail.
The geographic spread of institutions shows that the academic world is generally
interested in global issues related to vector biology and vector diseases.

English The training program has the main objective of updating and
equipping of National Malaria Control program managers and
their team members, Government and non-Government
partners in order to effectively scale-up malaria control
activities in their respective Countries/Regions. The training is
also expected to maintain and improve collaboration among
participating countries and different malaria experts and
individual participants.
The course, among others focuses on Epidemiology of
malaria, Entomology and vector control, program management,
planning implementation, monitoring and evaluation of malaria
control activities.
The training program, that will have two field brief visits to
Oromia region, attracts 34 participants from 11 AFRO
Anglophone countries.

CHALLENGES ON TRAINING ON VECTORS: THE LANGUAGE
Most of the courses are given in English, the second language is Spanish
and the third one is Portuguese. In Europe, courses are given in the
country languages.

6. 6
SOME RECOMMENDATIONS ON TRAINING ON VECTORS
• The distribution of the courses, the contents and the costs
made them not well available to those who are needing
them more (example of lack of courses in West Africa). To
increase vector control efficiency this issue has to be
addressed.
• Poor links between basic science and operational research,
and almost not link with other entomology (agricultural,
forensic). Such collaboration has to be encouraged and
supported officially.
• Training in medical entomology has to be organized,
harmonized at the worldwide level, not only for scientists,
but also for technical staffs.
7. 7
WHERE TO START TO ORGANIZE AND HARMONIZE THE
TRAINING AT THE WORLDWIDE LEVEL
Representatives of 17 higher education institutions coming from all regions presented
their courses on Vectors of Diseases and in Medical Entomology in general.
The main objective of this workshop was to discuss the development of a platform to
host courses on vectors, which would improve the visibility of the courses

FIRST STEPS FOR DEVELOPING AN INTEGRATED APPROACH
ON TRAINING COURSES FOR THE CONTROL OF VECTORS
1) Vectors Systematic and Biology (5 modules)
• Meeting with potential developers/institutions for developing a curriculum
• Development of each module
• External evaluation
• Pilot the course
• Professional layout
2) Interventions on vector Control
• On short term, development of good practice training course face to face with
possibility to develop it as on line course
- external evaluation
- piloting
- professional layout
• In medium term, multidisciplinary fellowships
• In long term, Master and PhD in VBDs in coordination with several institutions.
3) Research on Implementation
