RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CONCEPTS
Regardless and irrespective of how valuable, important or indispensable you might
perceive yourself to be, the only ingredient which can propel you from one stage to another is
choice. Choice refers to a set of influential or detrimental decisions we make in life. Choices can
either accelerate our motion or decelerate our gesticulations depending on its nature. It is an
articifier of thoughts, molder of actions and navigator of our destiny. We make choices in our
daily life and it is as a result of our choices that have made us who we are now. But the main
question which pops up in mind is, “What are some of the things which affect our choices”?
Imagine this scenario, Thomas, a seventeen year old boy who has the desire to be a medical
doctor lives with his parents Mr. Ray and Mrs. Adelaide. Thomas’s parents were very
industrious, hardworking and efficacious in the business field. Due to their behavioral setting,
they became so rich and were able to support their son Thomas through to Yale University. But
one day, their parents had a plane crash whilst flying to California to see how their Corn Mill
Factory was going and administer to some one or two stuffs pertaining to an issue with their
business. Due to how sudden the event was, Thomas had to drop from school and live with his
Aunt Selina who was a working at a store. Selina lived in a 2 bedroom apartment with her 6
kids. Her annual salary was $8,400.00 and was also a widow.
At this juncture, Thomas is now faced with the challenge of either pursuing his dream as a
doctor or finding himself a work to generate money. But the sad thing is, his Aunt’s annual
salary cannot even pay for his classes not to talk of his bills. Thomas then makes a choice to
quit school and starts working at a mechanic shop about 7 miles away from his Aunt’s house.
From this scenario, we can clearly deduce the fact that, even though we might make good
choices at the initial stage of our life, but the environment of freedom is that which affects our
choices. Even though there were many ways which Thomas could have handled this situation,
the bondage of fear, circumstances, challenges and financial constraints caused him to change
his choice of career from a medical student to an auto mechanic. In life, there will be
challenges, difficulties and tough situations which will come our way. But the major
environment/atmosphere we have to place ourself in so as to prevent us from making wrong
choices is the atmosphere of freedom. To further emphasise, freedom from fear, freedom from
stress, freedom from suppression, depression and oppression. Freedom catalyses and
influences our choices. The atmosphere of mental freedom, emotional freedom and spiritual
freedom is that which cushions us to make right decisions pertinent to our dreams, goals and
ambitions.
One power which I personally think everyone require is not only the power of
fame, money, luxury or even intelligence. But rather the power of choice(making right
choices). You can measure the nature of your choice by the productivity of your life. You can
know whether you are making the right or wrong choices depending on both the magnitude of
your influence based on your choice with proportionality to your direction. Meaning, you can
be influential in a field which does not pertain to your destiny or has got nothing to do with
your dreams and ambitions. And so what the power of choice seeks to do is to both align you to
the magnitude and direction of your calling so as to prevent you from succeeding outside your
domain whilst you are supposed to succeed in your domain. Measuring the graph of my life, I
would affirm to the fact that, I make the choices or I have made the choice to be who I am. At
first I used to fall for anything which comes my way without being circumspective of the
consequences which followed. But since I made up my mind to gain mastery of my life, I have
began to experience explosion and progress in various aspects of my life.
Chipping in the concept of environment and human condition, we would affirm to the
fact that, our environment play a major role in adjusting our condition. Imagine if you lived in
an environment full of negative, stressful and depressed people? You will also be affected by
that environment negatively and conditioned that way. Even though environment and
human condition are two different entities which are independent of each other, they inter-
relate to produce the effect of our state. Simply put, the nature of your environment
determines the state of your condition. And so, until a change of environment is being made,
productivity cannot be experienced. When I talk of environment, I am not only limiting myself
to the tangible environment which can be visualized. Viewing this same concept
psychodynamically, it produces the same results. The type of mental environment that you
continually ponder upon also determines your condidtion. For instance, if you continually think
about thought pertaining to murder and violence, you will end up engaging in such activites
which will in turn place you in a negative condition. There are some instances whereby
changing our physical environment becomes difficult. But one technique I believe can shield
you from falling into the trap of environmental homogeneous attraction is the method of
counteractive-effect.
This is the act of countering your environment with your thoughts or mental setting. Thus, even
though you might find yourself in an environment full of careless, violent and cruel people, you
can make up your mind to stand independently with respect to your focus and desire. You can
stand out and not stand in if only you are willing to antagonize that type of environment with
your mental setting.
History refers to events of past which relates to a particular condition or space. We are where
we are now based on our history. Our history was the spring which gravitatated us towards our
current location. And so, history in itself is indispensable. The relationship of history with
respect to the contemporary black body is based on the fact that, Most African American are
descendants of Black African Slaves forcibly held captive by the United States from 1555 to
1865.They were being tagged as negro or colored due to their complexion. Originally, African
American slaves were sold to slave traders from Arab, Europe and America. Most of the slaves
were packed in ships and brought to their respective masters and in the cause were
maltreated. Some of them commited suicide as a result. And so, it is as a result of history which
resulted in the current state of the Contemporary Black Body. Our history is what propelled us
into our current location, state and accomplishments. And it is also our history which has given
us our reputation.
