Why Has It Taken The Provider Sector Of The Healthcare
Industry Nine Times Longer To Adopt Consumerism Than
The Typical Deregulated Industry In The US?
One of the members of the exclusive Mastermind group is
Distinguished Professor Of Marketing at Texas A&M University. In
the 1970s Leonard L. Berry, PhD and his team were working at the
University of Texas at Austin. They were studying how long it
usually took for organizations in recently deregulated industries to
adopt the venerated “marketing concept.” They discovered that, on
average, it took companies in newly deregulated industries about
five years to adopt the marketing concept and the paradigm shift
from bureaucratic institutionalization to consumerism. Many years
later Professor Berry would find himself working with the
distinguished Mayo Clinic. Another member of the Mastermind
group, Dr. Ben Franklin, would provide the answer to this enigma
back in 1745. It was a “little neglect that breeds great mischief.”
