The Roman Empire was a political-military domain
exercised by the Roman civilization over part of
Europe, Africa and the Near East between the year
27 BC. and the year 476 after Christ
Who was the founder of the Roman Empire?
The Roman Empire began when Caesar Augustus
became the first emperor of Rome and ended in the
West, when the last Roman emperor, Romulus
Augustus was deposed by the king. Germanic
Odoacer (r. 476-493 CE).

Odoacer, who proclaimed himself King of Italy instead of
Emperor of the Roman Empire, was the last to defeat
Rome. On August 23, 476, Odoacer proclaimed himself
the first king of Italy.

government in which administrative, political, military, and

The Romans were polytheists, among their main divinities
were: Jupiter, Juno, Minerva, Bacchus, Mars and Venus.
They had the belief that their city was founded by
Romulus.

The history of Rome will last more than twelve centuries and
during this time it conquered the shores of the Mediterranean
and became the most powerful state of its time. From the
political point of view Roma went through three systems: the
monarchy, the republic, and the empire.

8. THE PATRICIANS
The oldest families in Rome, who formed an aristocracy of
landowners, were called Patricians. They had all the
fiscal, judicial, political and also cultural privileges. They
were full citizens. The name of Patricias was given to
them because it came from "father", in reference to the
fact that they were children of the founding fathers of
Rome. They made up the Roman Senate
Among the rights of the patricians was to occupy the
magistracies and important positions in the council of the
emperor and in the Senate, to be heads of the Roman
legions, they were authorized to take possession of the
conquered lands, they could enter colleges and circles of
Priests, as well how to exercise the cult of the city. In
addition, they had the right to own 3 names.
9. THE PLEBIANS
All those who were outside the group of the Patricians.
Originally they lacked rights, but through centuries of
social struggles, rights similar to those of the Patricians
were recognized. Among them to be Roman Citizens, to
elect representatives and to have their own political
institutions.
Among the plebians there were great economic
differences, the following groups can be distinguished:
nobles, knights and clients.

Nobles: They were the richest commoners, who were
equal to the patricians for their fortune and for holding
the most important political positions.
Knights: They were commoners with an intermediate
fortune, which they obtained for their work as merchants,
farmers or professionals, they came to occupy political
positions of medium importance.
Clients: They were commoners who had no resources of
their own and were at the service of a patrician (to go to
war, vote for him in the elections). In exchange, their boss
gave them food and/or money.
11. THE SLAVES
These three social groups made up the most politically
and economically favored sector in Roman society.
They had no rights of any kind. They were usually
prisoners of war. The number of slaves in Rome became
enormous with the expansion of the Empire. They were
forced to do the hardest and meanest jobs for life.
Many of these slaves were used to satisfy the desire for
fun of the Emperor and the people.
Slaves were the main actors in the "shows" that took place
in Roman coliseums and amphitheaters, where they often
had to fight to the death among themselves, fight with
wild animals or resist in chariot races.
