STUDENT SPOTLIGHT:
COURTNEY HAUN
You may recall seeing Public Health graduate student,
Courtney Haun, on ETSU’s homepage. As stated in her
homepage highlight, Courtney is a Greeneville, TN native,
so coming to ETSU was an easy choice for her. While at
ETSU in her undergraduate career, Courtney was very
involved in the College of Public Health and even served
as a CPR instructor. She stated that ETSU not only en-
couraged her academic success, but also her personal
success. Shortly before her undergraduate graduation,
Courtney started her own online boutique, Southern Chic Boutique. She is
currently in graduate school at ETSU to obtain her Master’s Degree in Public
Health.
Through her academic and entrepreneurial successes, Courtney reminds all of
us not to be afraid to try new things. We applaud Courtney for her continuous
efforts of success. She demonstrated her insight in the quote she stated for ET-
SU’s homepage regarding public health, “Public health is not any one thing,” she
says. “In general, it is the promoting of quality health and health outcomes, and
limiting health disparities among populations.” Well said, Courtney!
PUBLIC HEALTH FUN
ALUMNA SPOTLIGHT: MEGAN QUINN
After receiving her Doctorate of Public Health
degree from ETSU in 2012, Megan Quinn joined the
faculty as an assistant professor in the Biostatistics and
Epidemiology Department.
In addition to giving back to the College of Public
Health through her teaching, Megan also is very active
in giving back to the community and around the
world. As her doctorate field experience, Megan was
placed in Munsieville, South Africa. In 2011, she participated in Hope
Through Healing Hands, bringing a health promotion program to children
of South Africa. You can see Megan’s blog post on the HTHH website. In
January of 2012 , the Johnson City Press highlighted Megan as she served
alongside other members of ETSU’s Public Health Student Association to
help rebuild a local family’s home. Most recently, Megan spoke at the
Women on Wednesdays lecture series about her experiences working
with cervical cancer and PAP smear screenings conducted in Nicaragua in
July of 2014.
Megan Quinn continues to exemplify the ideal alumna from the College
of Public Health through her outstanding achievements in academics and
service and the role model that she is to current students.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW FOR THE
2014/2015 INFLUENZA SEASON
According to the CDC, Flu activity peaks in the United States between
December and March. Because many people are diagnosed with the flu
even after receiving the shot, it has become a recent trend to avoid taking

year, the flu vaccines are designed to protect against the 3 main strains of
the flu. To protect yourselves from the flu this season, the CDC recom-
mends taking the flu shot, washing your hands and avoiding contact with
the sick. If you are an ETSU student, visit the Student/University Health
Services clinic in Roy S. Nicks Hall, Room 160 or your local health depart-
ment.
For more information, visit the CDC website.
