Oh yes, it is! And it is urgent we react. Because otherwise, it will become a sexist crime, a genderist crime, a nationalist crime, an ageist crime, a religious (Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hinduist, Jewish) crime, etc., etc. The list could be very long. We have to stop this type of thinking that is nothing but paranoid ego-centered schizophrenia.

In the present situation that opens no perspective to any future at all, we are
more and more confronted with a new type of censors (those who practice
censorship) who are both bigots and zealots.
This is becoming a real unacceptable ukase on translation first and the
freedom of intellectual enterprise second. Amanda Gorman is not supposed to
be translated according to these bigot-zealots by Marieke Rijneveld because
she is not black. Imagine the crime if the translator had been a man, and
what’s more, older than the poetess herself!
These bigot-zealots or zealot-bigots consider that the translator must be a
perfect image corresponding to the author that is supposed to be translated. If
we accept – the way the very courageous publisher does – to yield to that
request then we are instating a totally racist principle, that would in its turn
justify other similar principles like sexism, genderism, ageism, nationalism,
and why not, on that line, shouldn’t the translator be of the same national
identity as the translated author.
A French author has to be translated by a French translator who is of the
same sex, the same ethnic affiliation, the same religion, the same gender
affiliation, the same color of course, etc. And a black person cannot even be
translated by an octoroon – to use an old slave-time word – because an
octoroon is not black enough.
And these zealot-bigots or bigot-zealots do not even consider that to
translate is to transfer the intellectual property of an author from
his/her/its/their own languages into another language, hence another culture,
and this transfer justifies then all other transfers in the other fields. “Its” refers
of course to a translating machine that also has translating-rights.
A petition should be launched about the freedom of translators to
translate what they want from any language they understand into any
language they are fluent in. And how do we do at the university for translating
tests? The subject will be different for each group, duly separated in different
rooms, men vs women; Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, handlists, Christians (split
up according to the branch of Christianity each student belongs to), and of
course agnostics and atheists. Then split the student bodies in nationalities, in
color, in age, in height and weight, etc., and the subject will have to be exactly
“CORRECT.”

3. Don’t these zealot-bigots see that it is absurd?
Obviously not!
And it is an abusive understanding of copyright in the USA to say that no
one has the right to translate a text by any author without his/her/its/their
permission, even if it is a complete work, novel, book, poem, or whatever. It is
generally courteous to inform the author and it is compulsory to have
his/her/its/their agreement before any public use, and even so, the freedom of
the translator is protected as much as that of the author, and “fair
use” can, under some conditions, suspend the obligation of paying any
royalties.
In Europe, the freedom of the translator is a lot wider because the sole
World Intellectual Property Organization’s rules and treaties are implemented.
That’s why the publisher should have reacted and said no, except if the author
herself (in this case, but it could be himself, itself, themselves) did object at
the choice for the translator for her poem (in this case, but it could be novel,
book, essay, etc.).
We have to create a new international organization or call for action.

publication remarquable sur sa page Facebook

Il est bon que ce débat ait lieu. J'ai moi-même une opinion résolue sur le

substance Antoine Berman... L'actualité de ces derniers jours, dont il est notamment
question (mais en anglais) ici :

nous amène à réinterroger ce principe. Et c'est une question qui s'adresse, parmi
nous, au moins autant aux citoyens qu'aux traducteurs et traductologues.
Je suis donc très heureux de relayer cette prise de position de notre collègue
Michel Prum. Et il n'est peut-être pas interdit, effectivement, de se retourner, par
exemple vers les associations professionnelles afin de monter une réponse
collective à ce type de phénomènes, qui, lui aussi, monte... Ce n'est pas
directement la fonction de cette liste, mais celle-ci, par contre, ne se fera pas faute
de relayer une telle réponse.

Rappelons que l’éditeur néerlandais Meulenhoff a acheté les
droits de la jeune poétesse afro-américaine Amanda Gorman
(celle qui a lu son poème The Hill we Climb lors de
l’investiture de Joe Biden) et en a confié la traduction en
néerlandais à la traductrice et écrivaine Marieke Rijneveld. Or
une activiste noire, Janice Deul, a lancé sur les réseaux
sociaux un mouvement exigeant la démission de Rijneveld au
seul motif qu’elle est blanche. Pour ne pas faire de vague, la
traductrice s’est effacée et l’éditeur s’est même excusé de son
choix inconsidéré. Ce ne sont pas les capacités ou
incapacités de la traductrice qui ont été prises en compte,
mais la seule couleur de sa peau. Une Blanche ne peut pas

7. traduire une Noire. Bientôt un homme ne pourra plus traduire
une femme, un valide ne pourra pas traduire un handicapé,
etc. Les traducteurs ne peuvent pas être assignés à ne
traduire que des auteurs qui leur ressemblent. Les
traducteurs sont des passeurs et toute la richesse de
l’humanité consiste à permettre ces passages entre groupes
humains et entre cultures diverses et variées."
