- #2 This presentation briefly introduces the B2SHARE data store and publication service of EUDAT.
- #3 B2SHARE is a user-friendly, reliable and trustworthy way for researchers, scientific communities and citizen scientists to store and publish research data coming from diverse contexts.
- #4 B2SHARE is a solution for researchers, scientists and communities to store research data for long-term preservation. Data is registered to guarantee long-term persistence. You can publish data with metadata annotation and control access and share data with colleagues and the world. B2SHARE features management possibilities for new and existing records, communities and metadata schemas. It creates persistent identifiers for all records, communities and different versions of each object. Records that need to be available to anyone without registration can be marked as open access upon creation of the objects.
- #5 The benefits of B2SHARE are as follows: Data is hosted, so you don’t have to worry about hardware or network issues All data objects are automatically assigned a persistent identifier, one for each version, so that these objects can be easily found and always be traced to the original depositor Data is stored alongside queryable & findable metadata. All metadata is automatically harvested by the EUDAT B2FIND service and is therefore easily discoverable even outside EUDAT premises Data is managed and stored by a EUDAT or external data centre to guarantee long-term preservation
- #6 Users can: Search for data sets that are publically accessible Download open access data Registered users can: Deposit and publish research data Download published data that is not open access EUDAT has no claim of ownership, but retains archive or replication rights at trusted centres to take care of long-term persistence and preservation of the data
- #7 B2SHARE is part of the EUDAT CDI and is directly connected to the B2DROP and B2SAFE services for data import and export. Other services like B2HANDLE are used to store persistent identifiers. Additional annotation like provenance data is stored using B2NOTE. B2ACCESS is required for authentication and authorization in the future. The B2FIND service is used for metadata harvesting so that your records can be found in the more general search service of EUDAT.
- #8 You can search for data by clicking on the “Search” button on the homepage of B2SHARE For advanced search, do the same and use the additional options shown below the search box.
- #9 All records are shown if no search term is used upon clicking on the search button. When clicking on the title of a record, the record’s detail page (or landing page) will be shown where the record’s title, description, PID, files and metadata are shown. If the record is open access, the files can be downloaded by clicking on their file names.
- #10 Users can upload many types of data in virtually any kind of format The data has to be scientific or have a similar purpose There is no limit on the amount of files per record, although the maximum file size is 2 GB per file Make sure you are allowed to upload the data and that it is compliant to data protection laws Unrelated personal data should not be stored on B2SHARE
- #11 To deposit and publish new data or download existing record files you need to register. On the homepage, click on ‘Login or Register’. You will be redirected to B2ACCESS where you can create a new account or use your institutional or communal credentials if they support it. Social accounts can also be used.

- #13 Deposition of new data is easy and can be done in 5 steps: Enter the title of your new record and select a community under which the new record should reside. If you are not publishing as part of a community, select the EUDAT community Add files by clicking on the dashed box, dragging files in it or by clicking “Add B2DROP files” to load files directly from your B2DROP account Fill in the basic mandatory metadata fields and indicate whether your record is Open Access It is not shown here, but B2SHARE allows you to enter a license to make sure your data is covered and can be used rightfully by the data consumer Use the public license selector tool to ease selection of the right license
- #14 Fill in the detailed and community-specific metadata fields Community fields are only visible when the community has defined a schema Some of the fields can be mandatory and therefore need to be filled in before continuing Check “Submit draft for publication” to immediately publish your record upon save Hit the button to save and publish your record! If the community has indicated that the record needs approval before publication, the published record will not be immediately visible

- #16 Repository managers can set up your own B2SHARE instance using your own infrastructure and configuration. As the code of B2SHARE is fully open source you can change every aspect of it, including the looks, configuration and functionality. The instance will have exactly the same possibilities as the EUDAT-hosted instance. You can use the B2ACCESS and B2HANDLE services for authentication and PID handling. An acceptance instance of the B2ACCESS service is available to test your credentials with temporary accounts. Deployment is officially supported by EUDAT and therefore you are free to ask questions and for help. The code of B2SHARE and further instructions can be found on GitHub.
