January 12th is celebrated as National Pharmacist Day to recognize all the pharmacists
across the nation. In addition to surgeons, nurses, and paramedics, this is another profession that
contributes immensely to the health care industry. Historically, pharmacists only dispensed
prescribed drugs to patients but, in recent times the role of a pharmacist includes much more.
From managing a patient’s drug schedule, ensuring that patients are disciplined in their
medications, managing insurance costs, and other patient concerns, pharmacists have made a big
impact in today’s world.1
According to a poll by Gallup, Pharmacists were ranked 4th among the most trusted
professionals in the United States in 2019 where 64% of U.S adults rated the honesty and ethical
standards of pharmacists as high/very high.2 A patient looks at the pharmacist as a trusted source
that provides complete information on the drugs that are prescribed, which is the biggest factor
that has primarily contributed to this ranking.
There are about 249,804 pharmacists in the US as of 2019 according to the American
Community Survey. 3During these tough times amidst the pandemic, it is more important than
ever that we take a moment to thank those friendly workers who give us health advice and have
been working relentlessly in providing us the necessary public health resources during these
unprecedented times.
It has only been in recent years that the world has started recognizing the profession of a
pharmacist and has dedicated an entire day in its honor. Although the US celebrates the national
pharmacist day on January 12th, the world celebrates International Pharmacist day on September
25th.
What can you do on this national pharmacist day? Stop by your pharmacy and thank your
pharmacist for the work they do or share some kind words for them on social media to recognize
their efforts. EMMA International thanks all the pharmacists around the world for their
contribution to public health.
