To our family, friends, customers and business
partners, and every person who has made
this journey possible and continue to stand
by us, as we embark on the next chapters of
Dynagraph's proud history. Ours is a family
tale of passion and resilience in the face of
adversity. The story of a modest enterprise
that overcame war and personal tragedies to
ultimately expand and thrive against all odds.
This historical perspective attempts to
capture some of the key events over the past
decades, which helped in transforming a
small family-run business into a key player in
the regional printing industry. In these pages,
we retrace the efforts and commitments of
family members and employees in building
an admired and respected pioneer in printing.
Most importantly, this chronicle pays
tribute to Ihsan El Kara, family member
and chairman of Dynagraph, who did not
spare any efforts and went the extra mile to
realize the family’s vision and safeguard the
common interests of his customers, partners
and employees.
Past and present colleagues will also find
themselves in these pages, as all of them
have played a significant role in elevating
Dynagraph to its current leadership position

Words, signs and languages have always been
essential to human civilization.Communication
was originally verbal, then evolved into hand-
writing.Writing was considered a cumbersome
and time-consuming method, before the
breakthrough of a technology which changed
the world: the printing press, a mechanical
device used to transfer ink from one surface
to another. Widely acknowledged as one of
the most important inventions in the history
of mankind, the printing press revolutionized
communications, broadening the reach of
the written word and greatly accelerating the
transmission of knowledge.
Although Johannes Gutenberg is commonly
regarded in theWest as the father of the printing
press technology,aChineseinventorbythename
of Bi Sheng first developed a more rudimentary
prototype in the mid 11th century AD.
Gutenberg adapted existing screw presses in
the mid 15th century and created the world’s
first complete printing system. A goldsmith
by trade, Gutenberg invented the mechanical
moveable type printing, leading the path for
mass mechanized production of newspapers
and books.
Whereas typographic hand printing could produce
approximately 40 pages per day, and hand
copying far fewer than that, a single Renaissance
printing press could churn out 3,600 pages daily.
Unsurprisingly, this revolutionary technique
rapidly spread throughout Europe. It is estimated
that by the early 16th century - within 5 decades
of the advent of the printing press - over twenty
million volumes had been printed throughout 200
cities across a dozen European countries.
The impact of the printing press was so
impressive, that the English philosopher and
scientist Francis Bacon could proclaim as early
as 1620 that the invention had “changed the
whole face and state of things throughout the
world”. Print media became synonymous with
the technique, and the term “Press” is still used
in this sense today.
From the onset, printing was practiced not
only as a means of communication, but as an
art form standing by itself. Gutenberg’s 42-
Line Bibles are amongst the most prized books

MAKING HISTORY IN PRINT
As the printing press expanded beyond Europe,
it helped standardize the format of other sacred
texts including the Holy Quran. The first
edition of the Holy Quran was printed using
moveable type that was produced in Hamburg
in 1694, while subsequent editions saw the
light throughout the 18th and 19th centuries
in Russia, Persia and the Ottoman Empire.
One can scarcely overstate the impact of the
“Gutenberg Revolution” on world’s history.
Simple, affordable access to the printed word
greatly democratized knowledge. A rapid rise
in literacy rates strengthened the middle classes
and challenged the traditional dominance of
elites, who have until then relied on exclusive
access to information.
New, often revolutionary ideas circulated freely
and rapidly, while traditional power structures
reacted uncomfortably to this new reality.
In parallel, European identities and nationalism
began to form, aided by the crystallization of
individual languages away from Latin. The
printed document, with its rapidly shared
common message, developed cultural self-
awareness and helped pave the road for the
birth of the European nations.
The 19th century saw the advent of steam-
powered rotary presses, replacing the original
hand-operated models and taking printing
to the new industrial level. Modern printing
was born.

MAKING HISTORY IN PRINT
Printing in Lebanon can be traced back to
1585, with the first press recorded at the
Convent of Saint Anthony of Kozhaya in the
Qadisha Valley; a second printing press was
established later in 1610.
The first publication in the Middle East was
the Book of Psalms. Afterwards, printing
broadened its horizons in Lebanon and
throughout the region, finally coming into
its own towards the end of the 19th century
as Beirut became a cosmopolitan cultural
and commercial hub in the region. Gaining
independence in the early 20th century,
Lebanon witnessed its literary and journalistic
communities thrive.
By the 1940s’, dozens of newspapers and over
100 periodicals were published in Beirut,
in Arabic, French, English and Armenian.
Lebanon hosted the first Arab Book Fair in
1956, and in the 1960s Beirut hosted over 250
printing presses and nearly 100 publishing
houses. Authors from throughout the region
sought asylum and found freedom in the
progressive and tolerant Lebanese intellectual
community.

At the end of the second world war, in the
1950s’, and despite the political uncertainty
and regional turmoil, Beirut established itself
as a dominant hub of Arab publishing and
printing. It was in this context that Youssef
Kara & Fils was born in 1952, hoping to
take advantage of the increasing adoption of
modern printing presses and book distribution
channels that were revolutionizing the industry.
Youssef El Kara used the little funds he had
managed to put aside as a railroad employee
to register the company with his eldest son,
Nicolas. The rest of the family joined soon
thereafter, with brothers Antoine and Sami
coming on board in a 25 sqm rented office
space in downtown Beirut’s Azarieh Building.
The company will forever change the lives of the
7 family members, as they journeyed together
through severe economic and political crises,
ultimately culminating in tragedy and war.
The company was born at a unique time in
the history of the print industry. Indeed, just
one year earlier, the inauguration of Drupa
trade show took place in Germany. This fair
attracted over 500 exhibitors and close to
200,000 visitors from all over the world in its
first edition. Drupa clearly catered to a growing
interest in printing products, and subsequently
took place every 4 years, establishing itself as
the leading trade show for main stakeholders in
the printing industry worldwide.
Building on its initial success, Youssef Kara
and Fils opened its first regional subsidiary
in neighbouring Syria in 1960. Managed
by Sami El Kara, this foothold in Damascus
aimed to explore the Syrian market and grow
its potential.
By 1965, the company had grown to 15 staff
members, and had expanded into a full floor of
the Azarieh Building.
During this period, Antoine Youssef El Kara
began aggressively developing business in
the Gulf market, diligently building personal
relationships with customers in the region. His
contagious passion and enthusiasm owed him
the admiration of his clients, who still recall his
diligence in installing, operating and servicing
equipment. YKF’s strength in service can be
traced back to this period where it remained
one of its key distinguishing characteristics.

After signing a GSA agreement with Roland
Offset for Lebanon in 1967, Nicolas El Kara
secured a major achievement in the short
history of the firm. With the pioneering
introduction of offset printing in the region,
YKF gained a reputation as a technological
innovator and trendsetter in the industry.
Customers embraced the new technique as an
advantageous alternative to letterpress, and
YKF expanded its prepress, after-press and
auxiliary equipment product program. That
same year, YKF redefined its business model
from sales agent to systems integrator.
During the Spring of that same year Drupa
1967 was held, marking “the threshold between
the old and new worlds of print technology,” as
defined by authorWallis Laurence.
Over the following years and decades, the
industry would undergo radical transformations
with the emergence of phototype-setting, and
ultimately the integration of personal computers
and prepress equipment.
Coinciding with this technological revolution,
Lebanon’s regional role in the industry gained
importance. As Beirut confirmed its status as a
publishing and printing hub,YKF became one
of its major suppliers.
Unfortunately, the lack of access to financing
from local banks stifled growth in the industry.
Nicolas El Kara persevered and led the company
in meeting growing demand for printing: the
following two decades saw the printing industry
occupy the 5th rank in terms of contributions to
the Lebanese national GDP.
Asaconsequenceofthisdevelopment,the“Union
of Owners of Printing Presses in Lebanon”, the
first printing syndicate in the Arab World, was
established and registered at the Ministry of
NationalEconomyandSocialAffairsinLebanon
in September 1947.

After many years groomed under the guidance
of Nicolas and Antoine Youssef El Kara, Ihsan
El Kara became partner in the firm in 1971.
One of his first achievements in his new role was
the signature of a cooperation agreement with
Linotype & Machinery, and Linotype Paul, a
type foundry company which developed first a
revolutionary phototypesetting machine from
Linotype, capable of setting 24,000 characters
per hour, and then an innovative cathode ray
typesetter, the Linotron 505.
Linotype which dominated the print industry
throughout the twentieth century, became the
first company to introduce Arabic fonts.Their
design and manufacturing was of such quality
that major parts required no replacement
for many years. Print technology gradually
moved to phototypesetting, a process involving
the projection of characters onto films.
With the first electronic photocomposition
system featuring digital storage, a new era of
typesetting technology dawned.
In 1971, YKF staged their first major
publicity campaigns: a live demonstration of
the Roland - Favorit 0B printing machine in
the lobby of the former Carlton Hotel in
Beirut. This bold move created excitement
around the YKF's brand name, attracting the
attention of clients and competitors alike. This
four-day event cemented YKF’s standing as
industry leader.
Later in the year,YKF confirmed its first major
order of 5 multicolour offset presses, charting a
course in lead time reduction from 10 months
at the time to 4 months. Given the company’s
limited funds at the time, this risky decision
epitomizes the bold ambition and drive that are
hallmarks of theYKFs’ spirit.
As technical complexity and sophistication
grew with the introduction of electronic
controllers and computers to the printing
process, a team of technical engineers was
established in 1972, overseeing the installation
and maintenance of a growing number of
phototypesetting devices as well as a variety
of printing & paper converting machines.

MAKING HISTORY IN PRINT
YKF worked closely with Linotype in developing
the very first Arabic phototypesetting software.
The “505” a model running Arabic font
was installed in Beirut’s “Dar Al Kalam” that
same year.
With technology evolving at a dizzying pace,
constantly transforming the printing and paper
converting industries, YKF realized that there
was a clear and unmet need for specialized,
higher education programs in print. A need
that would take years to meet..
In 1973, then tragedy stroke when Antoine
Youssef….. and his mother perished in a
car accident leaving clients, vendors and
competitors to speculate on the imminent
demise ofYKF.
Nevertheless,the company’s resolute determination
and the family’s firm commitment to the industry
helped YKF overcome one of the darkest
chapters in its history. During this period, Ihsan
El Kara continued expanding YKF’s reach
in the region, laying the groundwork for the
company’s future success throughout Saudi
Arabia and the Gulf area.
Brighter times were in store for YKF as 1974
dawned. During an event held at Beirut’s
Phoenicia Intercontinental hotel, customers
from across the Levant and Gulf gathered for
a demonstration of the first analogue toner-
based colour proofing system, manufactured
by DuPont under the name Cromalin.
During the same year,YFK won the order for a
Linotype pacer web offset newpaper press. In a
daring unprecedent move,the machine weighting
several tones, was air-freighted to ensure it's
timely delivery to print the issue of "Al Itihad"
newspaper on the UAE National Day.

MAKING HISTORY IN PRINT
With the tragic outbreak of the Lebanese civil war
central Beirut, Azarieh Building, was hit by
incendiary rockets, dealing a devastating blow to
a company still mourning the loss of one of its
founders.The blast tore through the offices and
storage space, resulting in inestimable damages.
Nicolas El Kara was the first to arrive on the scene.
The flames reduced the offices to ashes,destroying
furniture, financial files, cash, promissory notes
and all the vital customer records.
“It is hard to describe the level of emotional
stress, the feeling of helplessness in the face of
devastation at that moment. We were simply
speechless.” The only eloquent words said after
a long period of mournful silence were those of
Nicolas El Kara: “we built this establishment,
we will build it again”.
The staff was immediately assigned to collect
payable accounts and reconfirm promissory
notes; visits to vendors were programmed
to reassure them of YKF’s commitments.
The goal was to resume immediately the
company’s business activities. The near-
complete destruction pushed YKF to the
very brink, yet Nicolas and Ihsan El Kara
saw the silver lining on the clouds. Seizing
the opportunity provided by tragedy,
they rebuilt the firm from the rubble. Like
the phoenix rising from its ashes, YKF would
be reborn and emboldened, maintaining its
leadership and dominance in the Middle
Eastern printing industry.
In an attempt to mitigate future risks, YKF
sought to relocate its office to Tabaris Square,
in another area of downtown Beirut. A nearby
warehouse was leased for storage. Sadly,Tabaris
would soon come to form part of the “Green
Line” separating the conflicting areas of Beirut.
YKF continued serving customers on both sides
of the Green Line, with employees routinely
risking their lives in the course of business.
A testament to the spirit of the firm and the family,
YKF held year-end event year after year, in the
face of the surrounding devastation and conflict
of the civil war’s early days.

These festive gatherings were unique occasions
for Ihsan and Nicolas El Kara to demonstrate
their leadership and reassert their commitment to
the company’s vision and mandate, and reaffirm
the importance of cohesion and dedication
throughout the workforce.
Taking no notice of the sad events unfolding
in Lebanon, YKF introduced the Cyrel Flexo
Plates and reproduction equipment for flexible
packaging and corrugated printing in 1976.
That same year the DuPont Cromalin proofing
system was also introduced in Riyadh, allowing
packaging customers in Saudi Arabia to be on
a par with their European peers.
YKF further expanded its reach in the Gulf
during 1976, with Ihsan El Kara establishing
Trans Orient Modern Machinery (TOMM)
in Saudi Arabia as the first subsidiary officially
registered outside the Levant region. That year
also saw the company deliver one Manroland
Rotoman five colours commercial web offset
press to National Offset Printing Press in Riyadh
for the printing of school books. Expanding
rapidly,the Saudi office would count 7 employees
by the end of its first year of operation.
International expansion continued in 1977,
with YKF Dubai being established in the
United Arab Emirates, staffed by 5 employees
covering the neighbouring territories of Qatar,
Bahrain,Yemen and Oman.
One of the most notable achievements of that
year was the sale of a large number of prepress
equipment to Dareyah Village, a Saudi Arabian
Printing Company.A RotomanWeb Offset Press,
four sheetfed offset presses and a hard cover book
binding line, together with case making, hot foil
embossing and a complete magazine soft cover
line were all delivered to a client in the KSA.

Alghanim & Kara was the last office established
in the Gulf in 1981, in partnership with Mr.
DirarYoussef Ahmad Alghanim, and employed
4 persons.
YKF had already been participating as an
exhibitor at major international trade fairs for
a quarter of a century by 1982.These included
TPG in Paris; IPEX in Birmingham and
Interpack in Düsseldorf.Yet no trade show came
close to Drupa in terms of prominence and size.
Drupa 1982 was no exception, and, despite the
backdrop of a conflict tearing its home country
apart, at its booth YKF welcomed all visitors
from the region alongside its partners. Every
four years, Drupa gathered the cream of the
crop of the print industry for 10 days, with
deals being struck between representatives from
across the world. YKF’s presence was crucial
for its growth and expansion.
Seeking greater proximity to suppliers, and
realizing that the conflict in Lebanon was
showing no sign of waning, Ihsan El Kara
registered an office in Frankfurt in 1978.While
Nicolas El Kara managed operations in Jordan,
Syria and Lebanon, Ihsan El Kara invested
considerable time traveling throughout the
Gulf region, establishing and running an
independent sales network in Kuwait City,
Riyadh and Dubai, reporting to the German
office and coordinating daily business activities.
TransOrientModernMachinery,Riyadhclaimed
a remarkable achievement in 1982-83 with the
completion of the Holy Quran Printing Project
for the King Fahad Quran Printing Complex in
Medina, Saudi Arabia, in cooperation with Saudi
Oger the leadcontractor.

MAKING HISTORY IN PRINT
A total of 32 Manroland printing units for large
offset presses, 6 medium offset printing units,
along with Kolbus hardcover binding lines
and additional auxiliary finishing equipment
were installed. This was a first for YKF,
delivering a turn-key solution to its clients in
an unprecedented scale project.
The Middle East’s first regional printing
exhibition was organized in 1985 in Dubai and
YKF, through its participation, reiterated its
position as key player in the industry throughout
the Arab world. In the face of tremendous
adversity, YKF maintained a strong image
and strengthened its reputation as a dynamic
innovator in print.
Moving past the setbacks of destroyed assets
and heavy losses, YKF set out to become a
focal point for expertise in technical printing.
It rapidly became apparent that achieving
this goal would require the establishment of
a training center to help customers acquire
the crucial experience they lacked. This lofty
goal would remain a distant dream until the
turn of the century, when the first of its kind
training center opened its doors in Dubai: the
Manroland Technology Transfer Center.
In Lebanon, Beirut suffered unrelenting
shelling throughout the year. Trading in paper
had proven to be a successful commercial
venture, but it faced an insurmountable setback
due to the conflict, as a blaze from a nearby
military depot engulfed the Mkalles warehouse,
