Winters could be ruthless to our hair. Your hair is exposed to changing temperatures –
cold outside while heat inside the home. This leaves your hair dry and thirty for
moisture. The cold breeze shows no mercy to your hair and makes them brittle. Your
scalp also tends to get dry in the cold weather making them vulnerable. Here is a list of
do’s and don’ts for your hair in the winters.
Do’s
Instead of leaving them open make braids or buns so they are tucked in safely. This is
one of the best ways to protect them from the harsh elements – dust, heat and breeze.
Always wear a cap or hat when you go out however, remember that wool drains
moisture from your hair so don’t wear a woollen cap directly. Use a cotton scarf below it
or you could buy one with a cotton or silk lining.

2. Oil your hair twice a week there are so many natural oils – almond, coconut jojoba and
even wheat germ are great for the scalp. You could also use essential oils such as
lavender or rosemary. Rosemary triggers hair growth while lavender tranquilizes a dry
scalp. Massage your hair well and leave it for atleast two hours before you shampoo.
Don’ts
The cold climate is already quite hard on your hair so don’t use too much artificial heat
on them.Don’t blow dry your hair let them dry naturally, if you are in a hurry then keep
the heat to minimum. Avoid using straightener’s during this time of the year. Don’t use
heat for curling, you can use natural and different ways of curling your hair. There are
many DIY’s available online that can help you with curling your hair.
Don’t shampoo your hair everyday -twice a week would be adequate. Try using a leave
in conditioner. The ends of your hair are the ones that face the most heat damage from
flat irons and hair dryer’s. Leave in conditioners give protection to your hair from heat
and also help in dealing with the static prone hair of winter.
Don’t use hot water to wash your hair, it will strip your hair or all its natural oils and
make it dry. While cold water is the best for your hair, you may also use very mild or
lukewarm water to wash them.
Here are some home remedies that will help in keeping your hair intact and make
it strong and healthy to endure the harsh winters.
Aloevera is widely available these days. Use fresh aloevera gel and apply it on your
scalp. Leave it for two hours and then wash it off with lukewarm water. Aloevera
contains a proteolytic enzyme that stimulates hair growth. It also helps in calming an
itchy scalp and Vitamins A, C and E in it helps in making your hair strong.
Onion juice is a wonderful and easy home remedy for falling hair. It has properties to
heal alopecia or baldness. It fights brittle and dry hair, premature greying, itchy scalp,
hair loss and even dandruff. Grate one medium onion and squeeze to extract its juice.
Use a cotton ball to apply it on your scalp. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash it off.
Shampoo your hair to get rid of the onion stench.
There is nothing like egg white for treating hair fall. It contains iodine, selenium, iron,
phosphorus and zinc. The egg white is like fertilizer for your scalp. It cleans your scalp
and provides it adequate nutrition so that your hair remains strong. Take the white of
one egg and add a teaspoon of olive oil. Mix and form a paste, apply it on your scalp
and hair and leave for 20 minutes. Wash it with lukewarm water and shampoo.
