• Dr. Ellen Wilson joined the University of Texas Southwestern
Medical Center as an associate professor and practitioner in
2001. As a gynecology, reproductive endocrinology, and
pediatric and adolescent gynecology specialist, Dr. Ellen
Wilson has treated patients for an array of conditions,
including fibroid tumors and endometriosis.
A painful disorder affecting the pelvic organs, endometriosis
occurs when the endometrium tissue lining the uterus begins
to grow outside of the uterus. If the disorder is left untreated,
pain can increase significantly, and women may experience

3. Endometriosis
• Unusually painful periods are one of the most
common symptoms of endometriosis, along with
pain and irritation following intercourse. While
painful urination generally occurs in tandem with
painful periods, a woman with endometriosis may
experience discomfort during bowel movements and
urination at any time. Those who traditionally
experience minimal bleeding during periods may
notice heavier periods or intermittent bleeding
between periods. Other symptoms associated with
endometriosis range from dull achy pelvic pain to
constipation.
