Technology, Sept/Oct 1987.
Education Experience
Health Services Instructor, MSTC, Marshfield, WI 2007 to date
Developed curriculum and instructed the following courses:
 Laboratory I and II Procedures: Since 2007, I have taught these two courses
in the Medical Assistant Program. Topics include phlebotomy, lab safety,
infection control, and CLIA waived testing. I currently teach on two MSTC
campuses.
 Applied Microbiology: Several semesters in the Central Service/Surgical Tech
Program
 Human Body in Health and Disease: Two semesters
 Medical Law and Ethics: Three semesters
 Phlebotomy: Two sessions for the Clinical Research Coordinator Program
 Medical Terminology: In Fall of 2016 I will also teach this course.
Total Quality Management, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, WI 1993- 1997
 Process Improvement: Only lab manager initially selected by Marshfield
Labs Administration for training in the Total Quality Management Process
implemented by St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, WI. Using the TQM
process, I facilitated the following TQM teams:
 Arterial Blood Gas Turnaround Times: Savings = $35,000! A
team of physicians and other St. Joseph’s ER and Marshfield Labs staff
collected data on arterial blood gas turnaround times, charted the
entire process, and implemented changes resulting in a reduced
turnaround time for arterial blood gas results. Note: As a result of
this team’s work, it was not necessary to invest $35,000 in a new
pneumatic tube system.
 Orthopedic Surgery: A team including physicians, and various
members of surgery reduced surgical costs by analyzing processes,
identifying and resolving inefficiencies.
 Education Department: A team consisting of various members of
the St. Joseph’s Education Department also reduced costs by analyzing
processes, identifying and resolving inefficiencies.
 TQM Trainer: One of six team members selected to conduct TQM training
of St. Joseph’s Hospital departments
Phlebotomy Manager, Marshfield Laboratories, Marshfield, WI 1987- 1997
 Phlebotomy Practicum: Supervised a NAACLS approved phlebotomy
practicum affiliated with Midstate Technical College. There were 2
practicums/year, each 12 weeks, each 12 students.
 Staff training programs: Created, implemented and supervised training
programs for specialized phlebotomy techniques.
 Neonatal Blood Collection Techniques: Blood collection from infants in
the Neonatal Intensive Care Dpt. of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield,
WI.
 Pediatric Blood Collection Techniques: Blood collection from children
in the Pediatrics Dpt. of Marshfield Clinic, Marshfield, WI.
 Arterial Blood Collection Techniques: Collection of blood from an
artery.
 Indwelling Lines Blood Collection: Collection of blood from indwelling
lines for patients in the Oncology Dpt. of the Marshfield Clinic.
 Presentations on various phlebotomy topics
Piano Pedagogy, Deb’s Piano Studio, Marshfield, WI 2002 to date
 Conduct private studio piano study, beginning through advanced, ages 6
through adult. I have taught approximately 50 total students since 2002.
Laboratory & Management Experience
Clinical Lab Scientist, Marshfield Clinic, Marshfield, WI, 1997-2002
 Performed Immunohematology testing, prepared all blood products for safe
transfusion, identified irregular antibodies.
Manager, Phlebotomy Department, Marshfield Clinic, Marshfield, WI 1987-1997
 Quality Improvement: Responsible for monitoring of QI indicators, risk
management, incident reports, and all process improvement. Under my
management, needle stick injuries and patient identification errors were
significantly reduced, and several phlebotomist training programs were
implemented.
 Communications: Conducted all department meetings. Communicated
regularly with patient care managers, medical assistants, and physicians. I
was the Marshfield Labs representative at Marshfield Clinic Patient Care
Services meetings.
 Program development: Worked with Human Resources to develop and
implement the first “career ladder” at the Marshfield Clinic. The career
ladder enabled phlebotomists to advance through increasingly technical skill
levels and be financially compensated according to skill level.
 Financial: Responsible for $500,000/yr. departmental budget
 Personnel: Approximately 70 staff, hiring, orientation, training, appraisals,
department meetings, conflict management, and disciplinary action.
 Technical: Education and proficiency of staff in computer procedures and all
aspects of blood collection for approximately 400 inpatient collections/24 hrs.
for St. Joseph’s Hospital, and 500 outpatient collections/day for Marshfield
Clinic. Procedures: Basic outpatient/inpatient venipuncture, urine collections,
pediatric and neonatal blood collection, indwelling line blood collections,
arterial blood gas collections, computer procedures, morning hospital rounds
 Scheduling: Scheduling process for 6 outpatient phlebotomy labs in the
Marshfield Clinic, 24 hour inpatient phlebotomy coverage for St. Joseph’s
Hospital, and visiting phlebotomy service at the Marshfield Living Center.
Maintained a pool of phlebotomists for adequate phlebotomist replacement.
 Lab development: Designed a new Urgent Care phlebotomy lab, and two
outpatient labs. Designed a specialized lab for collection of urine for drugs of
abuse.
