in the Medical Assistant Program. Topics include phlebotomy, lab safety,
infection control, and CLIA waived testing. I currently teach on two MSTC
campuses.
Applied Microbiology: Several semesters in the Central Service/Surgical Tech
Program

Total Quality Management, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, WI 1993- 1997
Process Improvement: Only lab manager initially selected by Marshfield
Labs Administration for training in the Total Quality Management Process
implemented by St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, WI. Using the TQM
process, I facilitated the following TQM teams:
Arterial Blood Gas Turnaround Times: Savings = $35,000! A
team of physicians and other St. Joseph’s ER and Marshfield Labs staff
collected data on arterial blood gas turnaround times, charted the
entire process, and implemented changes resulting in a reduced
turnaround time for arterial blood gas results. Note: As a result of
this team’s work, it was not necessary to invest $35,000 in a new
pneumatic tube system.
Orthopedic Surgery: A team including physicians, and various
members of surgery reduced surgical costs by analyzing processes,
identifying and resolving inefficiencies.
3. Education Department: A team consisting of various members of
the St. Joseph’s Education Department also reduced costs by analyzing
processes, identifying and resolving inefficiencies.
TQM Trainer: One of six team members selected to conduct TQM training
of St. Joseph’s Hospital departments
Phlebotomy Manager, Marshfield Laboratories, Marshfield, WI 1987- 1997
Phlebotomy Practicum: Supervised a NAACLS approved phlebotomy
practicum affiliated with Midstate Technical College. There were 2
practicums/year, each 12 weeks, each 12 students.
Staff training programs: Created, implemented and supervised training
programs for specialized phlebotomy techniques.
Neonatal Blood Collection Techniques: Blood collection from infants in
the Neonatal Intensive Care Dpt. of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield,
WI.
Pediatric Blood Collection Techniques: Blood collection from children
in the Pediatrics Dpt. of Marshfield Clinic, Marshfield, WI.

significantly reduced, and several phlebotomist training programs were
implemented.

regularly with patient care managers, medical assistants, and physicians. I
was the Marshfield Labs representative at Marshfield Clinic Patient Care
Services meetings.
Program development: Worked with Human Resources to develop and
implement the first “career ladder” at the Marshfield Clinic. The career
ladder enabled phlebotomists to advance through increasingly technical skill
levels and be financially compensated according to skill level.
Financial: Responsible for $500,000/yr. departmental budget
Personnel: Approximately 70 staff, hiring, orientation, training, appraisals,
department meetings, conflict management, and disciplinary action.
