1. Six Months Waiting Period for Postpartum Tubal
Ligation
Deborah Yeboah
Dr. Gloria Bachmann, Preceptor
To educate women on the permanent nature
of tubal ligation and encourage women to wait
at least six months for postpartum tubal ligation.
• Postpartum tubal ligation is a highly desired
and commonly used permanent contraceptive
for women who do not want to get pregnant
again.
• Approximately 650,000 tubal ligation
procedures performed annually in the United
States.
• About 50% are performed in the postpartum
setting following 8-9% of all live births.
• This life changing decision is made during
pregnancy which can cause regret.
• The factor strongly associated with regret is
being 30 years or younger at the time.
• Other factors may include relationship
problems, stress due to pregnancy
complications, and being in a new
relationship after sterilization.
• Statistics indicate the importance of
educating and encouraging women to wait at
least six months after childbirth to make any
decisions.
To evaluate success, surveys will be given to
women to determine if they decided to wait at
least six months before undergoing the tubal
ligation procedure.
• A six-month waiting period to reduce the
amount of tubal ligation performed during
the postpartum period will be supported.
• After reviewing all abstracts and titles, 150
articles were chosen to have relevance and
100 of which were excluded.
• From these, 50 full text articles were
assessed for eligibility, 30 of which were
excluded based on study interest.
• In total, 20 studies were included in the
qualitative analysis.
• The articles will be used to propose an
intervention for women.
• A focus group will be created for women who
are deciding to have tubal ligation procedure
done right after birth.
A special thank you to Dr. Bachmann, Chi-Wei,
and Ann Marie Hill who helped make this
project a success.
