Introduction to leadership:
Explain the differences between management and leadership, and how cultivating leadership skills in managers can benefit the organization.
Management – Quick description – According to Business Dictionary (2014), “The organization and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve defined objectives” (para. 1).

Managers usually carry out the objectives and goals of the corporations he or she work in. A leader is best known for how he or she motivates and inspires others to perform duties in accordance with the company’s goals and objectives.

How cultivating leadership skills in managers can benefit the organization
Cultivating leadership skills in managers – company’s want to hire individual’s that can take on a leadership role. All managers should learn to cultivate the leadership skills required in his or her job. Duffy (2007), “Old-school philosophy suggests that leaders are simply born that way. While there are natural-born leaders, leadership skills are not necessarily innate and must be honed” (para. 1). Review some of the characteristics of a leader such as, honest, invested, engaged, and respectful.
Benefits to any organization – name one major benefit – when managers learn leadership skills this enables the company to utilize the managers skills fully. This allows the business to run more smoothly and efficiently.

Explain how managers can set effective expectations for their employees to increase organizational performance.
Set Effective Expectations – read graph. Evaluating the current expectations of employees will aid managers in effectively setting future expectations.
How this increases organizational performance – When managers set effective expectations on his or her employees this encourages those employees to perform task on-time, and obtain company’s goals. If expectations are set too high for an employee, this will discourages the employee and thus the performance levels will drop.

Organizational culture:
Describe how managers, when applying leadership principles, can contribute to a healthy organizational culture.
Managers can contribute to a healthy culture – Read bullet then review chart.
How? – Read Parts of Chart and this leads to Employee Engagement.
Signs of a healthy organization According to "Management Vs. Leadership In A Healthy Organizational Culture" (n.d.), “In a healthy organization, managers will accept the strategic direction shared by the leadership team and find ways to carry it out. Leaders will communicate clearly and honestly, and establish clear milestones” (Signs of Good Health, para. 1).
Slide 10- Managerial control:
Identify some of the key control mechanisms, and describe how management can apply them to aid in achieving organizational goals.
Few examples of control mechanisms, business plan, needs assessment, and budgets. Every business needs a business plan along with a budget. Without these two control mechanisms a business would fail. Managers and leaders must understand the company’s business plan and budget in order for the company’s goals and objectives to be met.

Slide 12- Leveraging diversity:
Summarize some of the best practices for leading a diverse workforce – According to "Leading A Diverse Workforce" (n.d.), “A diverse workforce is a reality for any small business today. According to the Work Diversity Network, a national network of professionals and major companies working for diversity in the workplace, women and ethnic minorities represented 70 percent of new entrants in 2004” (para. 1).
Best practices for a diverse workforce – a good practice for companies is to offer a Diversity Workshop for current and new employees. Try to bridge the gaps between cultures will required, and a good practice to begin.

One example of the benefits that can come to the organization through leveraging diversity. When companies embrace diversity within the workplace this allows for employees to utilize culture experiences and talents fully within the workplace. This variety leads to company’s utilizes all the resources that are within the workforce. Understanding how to leverage diversity will open new ideas and allow the company to flow more efficiently.
