Editorial
Dear Hon’ble
Minister, please
save the Nokia
ecosystem
T
he new government led by PM
NarendraModiismakingalltheright
noises to accelerate the electronics
manufacturing sector in India. It’s hearten-
ing to see that the new Communications &
IT Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, hit the
ground running from the day one and is vig-
orously promoting the need to strengthen
the local manufacturing ecosystem through
right policies and much needed financial
incentives. Very recently, the Minister had
visited Germany and South Korea to attract
large-scale investments in the electronics
sector and fulfil Prime Minister’s dream of
“Make in India” a reality.
But, starting 1st November, the Finnish
giant Nokia suspended production at its
mobile manufacturing unit near Chennai
after Microsoft terminated their service
agreement. Nokia, along with its suppliers,
putupIndia’sfirstworld-classmobilemanu-
facturing ecosystem in 2006, the value of
which is depreciating with each passing day
now. The move caused an employment loss
of 8,000 in Nokia alone and close to 25,000
jobs in its ecosystem units. The question is,
which is to be blamed for this tax fiasco—
the previous UPA regime, or the loopholes
in our dated tax laws? I urge the Hon’ble
Communications & IT Minister to inter-
vene and revitalise this world-class mobile
manufacturing ecosystem to boost inves-
tors’ confidence.
The domino effect of the Prime
Minister’s “Make in India” call was
also visible at India’s largest electronic
trade-shows, electronica India 2014 and
Productronica India 2014, held at BIEC,
Bengaluru, in late September. The shows
registered unprecedented visitor turnout
and record participation this year. In all,
341 exhibitors, representing 713 compa-
nies, showcased their products, solutions,
and services, and 13,000+ business visitors
attended the shows. The Productronica
India show witnessed a bunch of new
machine launches; this reflected the
optimism and confidence of the global
vendors in India, both as a market for
electronic products as well as a base for
low-cost quality manufacturing.
I am happy to share that the world’s
leading PCB protective coatings (conformal
coatings) manufacturer, Humiseal, is
planning to “Make in India.” The company
will set up a wholly owned subsidiary
in India to cater to the needs of the local
market in the near future.
Not only are global vendors bullish
about Indian electronics industry; inter-
national trade show organisers are also
expanding their presence in India. Earlier
this year, the Indian operation and
subsidiary of Messe Frankfurt, Germany,
acquired the rights to organise and manage
the “LED Expo” fair from New Delhi-based
Media Exposition & Events. The country’s
largest and only LED Expo under its new
owners will be held from 5 to 7 December
at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Global SMT
& Packaging is a lead media partner of the
show. So, do drop by at our booth at LED
Expo 2014!
Another eventful year is coming to an
end. So, wishing you a Merry Christmas
2014, and a Flourishing New Year 2015 well
in advance!
